Lessons learned as graduation quickly approaches

Time flies.

We've all heard this too many times to count. We used to hear our parents, teachers, family and other adults say this and roll our eyes, thinking that this was an exaggeration.

But, alas, the old adage is true.

Here I am, 22 years young and preparing to graduate from college in a little less than two months.

College has without a doubt been an incredible experience, good days and bad days alike. Most people would cite the exciting and memorable moments made throughout these four years, but for me, what made truly appreciate the college experience was the "space."

Yes. Space. Very ambiguous, but that's the beauty of it.

High School is very structured. Same classes every day, same people. Calling this routine would be an understatement.

College frees us from the reigns of this structure. Instead, we are given space. Space to think for ourselves. Space to formulate our own strategies for success. Space to make mistakes. Space to grow.

So, how was my space defined? Observing.

My four years were spent observing and conversing with as many people as possible. These four years have given me the opportunity to meet and to connect with individuals from all across the globe. To discuss a plethora of topics with those who don't agree with me and with those who have lived a similar life to that of my own. To me, this is priceless and has given me a gift that will last a lifetime -- perspective.

If these past few months hasn't shown the world that perspective is greatly needed, then I don't what will. The world is constantly changing and it's our job to understand where we fit in this dynamic puzzle that we affectionately call life.

College is a moment in our lives to look beyond ourselves without too many pressing distractions. Yes, there are exams. Yes, many of us, including myself, have to balance work on top of the responsibilities we already have.

That being said, college is such a unique time. Never again will you have so much control over your time. Never will you have the freedom to indulge in what your day-to-day activities consist of in the manner that the college experience allows you to. I will forever be grateful for these four incredible years.

Sometimes a little space is all we need to figure out ourselves. Sometimes a little space gives us just enough room to stop and think about what it is we really want in life. Conversely, sometimes space can be too much. Sometimes some of us need more structure. Some need to have their schedules filled to the brim. Whatever your choice may be, college is a time to try every approach. Make mistakes, change your major, meet people. Don't stay in your comfort zone. Challenge your way of thinking. Become a better you.

College went faster than I could've ever imagined. There isn't a thing about this experience that I would change and it has helped to steer me in the direction that I want to go in life. Whatever next challenge comes my way in life, I am ready and willing to face it.

Thank you for the college experience for giving me space to create, to make mistakes, to carve my own path. Don't take these years for granted. Embrace them and create your own lane in life.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
