College Life: First Year Vs. Senior Year
Backstage

College is pretty universally thought to be the best four years of your life. Regardless if that is true or not, it most definitely can be agreed upon that it is the most transformative, whether or not that could be considered a good thing is up to the individual. But if you were to ask any senior in college if they're the same as they were at the beginning, I can guarantee you not a single one would say yes. A lot can change over those four years. You go from a fresh-faced idealistic first year, full of wonder and excitement, to a jaded senior, cynical and determined that booze is the best way to solve all your problems. But don't just take it from me, let the folks from Pawnee's parks and recreation department act as the perfect illustrators of this phenomenon.

1. Making friends

First Year:

You worry about how to do it.

Senior Year:

You know that, while you love all your friends, the best friend you have is yourself.

2. Feeding yourself outside of the dining halls

First Year:

You're figuring out how to do it on the cheap.

Senior Year:

You know that you need to treat yourself now and then.

3. First day of class

First Year:

So. Hype.

Senior Year:

Five minutes in, you're ready for it to be wrapped up.

4. Going out

First Year:

You spend your night worrying about where to go, what to wear, who's going to be there, and how to act.

Senior Year:

You know that there's only one thing that matters.

5. Going on a date

First Year:

It's all about making a good impression.

Senior Year:

You just put it all out there right away.

6. Studying for exams

First Year:

You stress out over mid-terms and finals.

Senior Year:

You go into exams completely unprepared like...

7. Group projects

First Year:

You take on more than you can handle.

Senior Year:

Your main concern is taking on as little as possible.

8. Pulling a successful all-nighter

First Year:

You can't believe you actually did it.

Senior Year:

You have a little help from something called shots.

9. Running into someone you know on campus

First Year:

You're so excited to say hello and have a conversation.

Senior Year:

You try and fail to avoid eye contact, and then dread the required interaction.

10. Planning out your life after graduation

First Year:

The world is your oyster and you are positive you'll have your stuff figured out by the time you graduate.

Senior year:

You discover your first year optimism was a little off.

But it's OK...

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
