College Isn't Everything It's Cracked Up To Be

You know how everyone always says that college is the best time of their life?

You know how everyone always says that college is the best time of their life. Well I beg to differ. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy my time here for the most part, but it is just like the rest of your life. There are obstacles and challenges that are thrown at you which you have to brush off and wake up the next morning and try to learn from.

If you ask almost any adult, they would most likely say that they would give anything to go back to college to relive one more year. Whether they say this because they didn’t have to stress about the same things as most students today do or because they realized they haven’t seen most of their college friends since they graduated, is a mystery to me.

Like I stated early, it is just like any other part of life. There will be obstacles. A good way of describing it is by asking you to choose two of the three options: social life, school work, or mental stability. Good luck with that choice.

There will be a diverse group of people that you will meet; some people you meet you will want to see every day and some people you can’t stand to even look at. Some of these people will be your professors (or in the real world, your bosses.)

Then there is the idea of having to get an internship so that you are well versed and prepared before entering into the work force. On average, 1.5-1.8 million students graduate from college each year. That means you have to make yourself stand out in front of those million other students in order to get that dream job; therefore, prior work experience is a huge advantage. e.g. internships.

Finally, the idea I believe most people forget about is the leadership positions which jobs/grad school/medical school wants to see on a resume.

So not only do we need to be a good students, be well versed with the different programs and equipment we will be working with in our years after college, and hold a leadership position on campus, but we also have to stay sane in the course of all this. Ha! I say to all of you out there: Good luck!

At this point it probably sounds like I hate being in college, but that is not true. I love having the ability to be independent and spread my wings to show my parents what an amazing job they did raising me. I love meeting the new people on campus on a daily basis, and I love staying active throughout my day by joining different clubs and groups.

However, I don’t like the fact that everyone says it is the time of their life and that they would do anything to come back to it. I think every day should be the time of your life; not just these four short years in college. After college people get this notion that you can’t have fun anymore because that’s not what adults do. That’s not true. Make every day worth living. Go experience the world around you and don’t relish on those four short years. Instead, look towards the future and find the passion that keeps you moving forward each and every day.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
