With the beginning of my second semester of my first year in college about to start, it's got me thinking a lot about how different it is compared to high school. Only one semester into my four-year journey in college, I’m really beginning to see how college is tremendously different from high school and to be honest, I don’t miss high school at all. Here are 5 reasons why college is so much better than high school.

1. Freedom

This is by far the number two reason why college is so much better than high school. In college you are free to go anywhere do anything and not have teachers or parents tell you otherwise.

2. Social groups

Social groups in college are so different compared to high school. In high school, no matter how big or small, there is always a certain group that everyone knows and they every one wishes they were a part of. However, in college, no one cares about that sort of social group. You can go off and be with your own people and do your own thing and no one cares at all.

3. Starting a future

Aside from the social aspects, in college you're finally able to begin studying in the field you've always wanted to study. Other then General Education courses, you’re free to choose all of your classes. High school, you have a very limited selection of classes to choose from and usually you have to be an upperclassman to get those classes.

4. Time

Like many high schoolers, they have set schedules and limited amount of time. A normal day at high school consist of waking up at the same time you usually do, going to school, and sticking to a schedule that everyone else follows. Personally for me, it became a never ending cycle and when I got to college, besides classes being at the same time every week, there was always something new. In college, you start your day off different from the day before. You could start your day by working out, getting ready for class, doing last minute homework, going to breakfast, or even better, sleeping in. Then from their you carry out your day, and who knows, you might get lucky and your professor cancels class that day. In college, there is no set schedule that everyone follows. You’re on your own time and it makes you feel less of a robot.

5. A new beginning

This is the number one reason why college is so much better then high school. College for everyone is a fresh start. Whether you’re coming from high school where you were the popular kid or the no so popular kid, it’s always a fresh start for everyone. And not just the first year, every year is because instead of spending all 4 years with the same people, like you did in high school, every year, even every semester, you ALWAYS have a class with a face you've never seen before. College is a new beginning. It’s a new beginning to grow, to change, to be better, and to truly find who you are. Something that you can never do in high school.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
