So, You're A College Grandma

Sometimes Netflix in bed is better than any party.

Picture this: it's a Friday night. It's the dead of winter, so it's super cold out, but everyone is dressing up in little outfits (sans coats, if I may add), ready to party all night long. They want to hop from one party to the next, from one bar to the other, and all you can think is "WHY ARE PEOPLE GOING OUT SO LATE IT'S SO FREAKIN' COLD AND ALSO I HAD CLASS ALL DAY I AM SO TIRED WHERE DO THEY GET ALL THIS ENERGY?!" You decide it's best to stay in your bed all night, bingeing Netflix until your eyes burn, a cup of tea next to you along with your favorite guilty pleasure snack.

I've been here a few times. Actually, many. This is because I'm a #collegegrandma. I prefer to stay in and get comfy cozy over a crazy night out on the town. This doesn't mean that I don't like partying every once in a while--I just feel like my bed offers more immediate and effective results than going clubbing. I say this mainly because most of the time I go out, I end up being unfulfilled. The line is either too long, the cover charge insane, the crowd weird, or the music crappy. Very rarely do I experience a club or bar that I actually like, so it's a much safer bet to just stay in.

The College Grandma gets a bad rep because students are expected to rage into the night all weekend long, but some of us just can't sustain that kind of lifestyle. If I have to stay out until 4 in the morning, you bet that I'm going to need to sleep well into the afternoon the night before just to prepare. And that means I lose half of a whole day to actually do things I need to!

Also, grandmas can have fun too. What's wrong with a night in? My place is warm, cozy, and safe, and I can do whatever I desire here (without having to freeze my ass out in the cold weather to see a crappy DJ).

There is one caveat though, at least for this College Grandma (moi)--once you get Grandma out of bed, she can party all night long. It's just getting her out of bed in the first place that's hard. So if you have a friend that is a College Grandma, let her be with her bed most of the time, and then every once in a while, blow her mind with an amazing night out. She will thank you for it. And then she will go to sleep immediately after.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
