Working in retail, my imagination has been buzzing with creativity lately. As I have recently discovered a different sort of passion for clothing, I have experimented with different outfit combinations that I normally wouldn't wear, but have found it fun and exciting to try. Summer is a great time to do this, so here are some things that i've learned and have made my wardrobe more exciting:
1. Organize your clothes.
I know in a tiny dorm or apartment this can be difficult, but if you know where things are and you know what you have, it's much easier to piece outfits together. If you're a real champ, color coding your closet allows you to make decisions faster, and more efficiently.
2. Combine different patterns.
There are so many amazing patterns that we never think to put together because it's not the norm, but when are bold, outfits look much better and are much more fun.
3. Pick a focal piece... or two.
You don't want to over-do it, but wearing a few pieces at a time that "pop," or really show off, can fix any bland or unoriginal outfit.
4. Layer.
Not only does layering allow you to be prepared for multiple temperatures, but it creates a visual effect that is unique and freeing.
5. Name brands don't matter.
People will focus on the creativity and aesthetic of the outfit, not what brand your shirt is. Fun fact: Mila Kunis bought her and Ashton Kutcher's wedding bands off of Etsy for $70.
6. Denim can fix most anything.
A denim shirt, skirt, or jacket can add a ton to any outfit. It's a classic yet fun material that will never go out of style, and you can never go wrong by adding denim to your outfit.
7. You don't have to spend a ton of money.
My favorite jeans were $3 from the sale section of H&M. And yes, I get complimented on them every time I wear them. I promise if you look hard enough at basic stores, even thrift stores, you can always find hidden gems!
8. Accessorize well.
Accessorize well, but not too much. A fun piece of jewelry, shoes, or a hand bag will do the trick, but you don't need all three.
9. Look in your own closet!
A lot of times, I have so many things that would look great together, but I forgot I had them or didn't notice that they were balled up in the back of my closet (see tip #1). Using different combinations of things that you already have can make the best outfits. Use your own personal style as inspiration!
