You Are Their Unofficial Mentor

Why Upperclassmen Should Befriend Freshmen
Haylee Olley

As an upperclassman, I never thought that I would befriend my residents, who happen to be freshmen. They have taught me things that I never thought I would learn. They gave me a new perspective and even brought me back to my time as a freshman. This is why upperclassmen should befriend freshmen.

1.) Brings you back to freshman year

They talk about the problems that freshmen have. They talk about the work they had, and they may even take the classes that you did at one point.

2.) Give advice

We already went through it as a freshman, so it is time for us to share our wisdom with others.

3.) Unofficial mentor

Upperclassmen have the opportunity to be a mentor to freshmen, but it makes life more personal when you are their unofficial mentor.

4.) Free food

Some freshman think they own the world and still have money in their bank accounts, so they can buy you food!

5.) The Adventures

They know of places that you have not yet discovered and vice versa. You can explore new things with your new friends.

6.) New interests

I know that my freshman friends may only be a year or a few months younger than me, but they have many interests that I do not have and made me love things that I never thought I would like.

7.) Energy

As us upperclassman is getting older, we cannot stay up as late as we used to. They keep us up at night because they have the energy that we do not have.

8.) Revitalize humor

In my experience, they have a different sense of humor than I have. They keep me on my toes and make me laugh at new things.

9.) Keeps me company

Being an upperclassman in a freshman dorm, they give me a place to go when I do not want to cross campus and do not want to be alone in my room.

10.) Always there for you

They have always been there for you. Of course, all my friends have, but it's more people to care for me in a time of need.

11.) Different perspectives about campus

Some things might have changed when we were here to when they came here. They will have a whole new outlook on where we live.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!
