A Letter To My College Friends

I could not do it without you!

A Letter To My College Friends
Sarah Carstensen

I have been blessed to have found great friends while in college. Carly, Katelyn and Bennett, you are one of the best parts about college! We each have different relationships with one another in our circle, but one thing remains constant — we all love to be together. When all four of us are together, there is always laughter and smiles. There are serious conversations — and silly ones too. There are spontaneous trips to Whataburger and much-needed times when we drive around. I have known each of you for different periods of time, but I thank God for intertwining our paths to all cross together at the same time!

Katelyn, girl, you and I go way back to, like, birth. OK, maybe not that far back, but pretty close! You and I both know that with both of our moms' baby pictures of us together, they could write at least two books! Our family’s relationship is proof that friendships can last a lifetime. I am almost certain that when your dad and my mom met in the third grade, they did not think their daughters would be at the same college and become best friends! Katelyn, you add just the right amount of gentleness to our group. We know when it is Katelyn at the door by your gentle and soft knock, but behind that knock is a loving girl who loves life! Thank you for being you because I love you!

Carly, when we met in the fourth grade, I had no idea we would be college roommates! God knew what He was doing all along, and I am so thankful He has us in each other’s lives. Our friendship continues to grow each day. Our journey of being in fourth and fifth grade together, moving two and half hours away from my best friend, eight years in different towns (with a few phone calls, UIL meets and letters in the middle) and then finally college roommates has certainly been one of a kind! I can only imagine what else God has in store for us in the future! Carly, you add just the right amount of wild and crazy to our group! You keep us all on our toes, as well as entertained. Thank you for always making us laugh.

Bennett, oh Bennett. Who knew that out of Tuesday’s IDS class I would gain a great friend! You are full of joy, which overflows into Carly, Katelyn and me. Your bluntness is something that makes us laugh continually, and I love that about you! You add just the right amount of spice to our group. I have enjoyed getting to know you this past year in college. All the memories we hold so close right now will only multiply in the years to come. I know our friendship has only just started, but I trust this is just the beginning of a great one!

Ladies, I love each of you dearly. You three are the ones who make college fun. I know we can get on each other’s nerves at times, but what kind of friendship would we have if we did not? Each of you is a blessing in your own unique ways. I am so grateful to have you by my side as we all journey through college together. I love you! See you in August!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
