Tips For a Successful First Year!

My Advice for College Freshmen

The unknown, a new beginning, a fresh start can be a very exciting, yet very frightening thing. Hugging my parents, saying goodbye to my grandparents, and petting my dog and cat was so upsetting, but soon enough I was adjusted to a new home: my college.

When I was about to begin my freshman year, before getting in the car to leave my safe haven--home, I made a list and checked it twice. I made sure to. . .

Brings Tons of Pictures--For decorating your dorm with pictures of loved ones is a great reminder of your positive memories growing up. Be sure to stay in touch with your friends, family, and classmates for this will make the adjustment much easier.

Reach Out--Because moving away, leaving your friends and starting a new school can be terrifying. The beauty about it is that everyone is in the same boat. Nobody knows who is in their classes, who they are going to eat lunch with, and who they are going to go out with on the weekend. Because of this, my best advice is to Reach Outto as many different people you can and see if you have common interests and and better yet become friends.

Try New Things--College is a time to find yourself and to develop your future. There are endless amounts of opportunities enhance your knowledge and skills. Don’t follow the crowd; branch out and participate in activities and clubs you are interested in. Never limit yourself because of your peers, their thoughts or their views.

Get Involved--At many colleges and universities there is usually a fair upon arrival or at orientation displaying the clubs, sports and events the campus has to offer. Be sure to attend as many extra programs or events as your schedule permits. This is a great way to build relationships, make connections; and who knows, you may even fall in love with a new hobby, sport, or find a new passion!

Be School Spirited–-The best way to unwind from a stressful day is to attend a sports game and cheer for your school. Always support your school, wear school colors with pride and root them on to victory!

Stay On Top of Your Work --Adjusting to a new schedule can be very tough at times. Time management is the key for a successful, fun and enjoyable first year.

Push Yourself --Push yourself to limits you didn’t think were possible. Do your very best to exceed your self expectations. College is a fresh start--a blank canvas. Take every opportunity to create that canvas into something of you can call your own one that you will be very proud of.

Just Be You--The most important tip I could give any incoming freshmen is to be yourself. Although you may not think so, you will be adjusted in a few weeks. Your new school will be your second home. Your friends will soon become family. They will love you, care for you and respect you for who you are.

Good Luck Class of 2020! Enjoy the journey!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
