To The College Freshman Who Feels Like Giving Up

I know where you're coming from.

Paul Jarvis

I was you.

I know what it feels like to be overwhelmed. I know what it's like to have so many things going on that you feel completely overwhelmed and incapable of doing everything right. I know what it's like to feel like everything is spinning out of control and that there seems to be no way to stop it.

But take heart.

It may not get easier, but it does get better. Remember why you're here. Remember how you got here. And remember where you're going. You've come so far, so don't let a step back become a hasty retreat to the starting line. Keep moving forward, and in time, after a few stumbles and retracing your steps, you'll get there.

College is hard. It's not for everyone. It is demanding academically, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. You've been challenged, and you will continue to be challenged, but don't let that stop you from moving on. Let those challenges push you forward, not backward.

You don't have to look like you've got it all together. Trust me, no one does. Some days may be easier than others, but we all have those days where the sun just doesn't seem to come up. Be genuine. Be authentic. And don't let your fears keep you from being real with yourself.

Don't be overwhelmed by all the opportunities you have because of where you are in life. Or, rather, be overwhelmed, and then realize that you don't have to do everything.

Your time is precious. Spend it wisely.

Make your future self proud when you look back on these college years and remember. Make it a time of growing, learning, changing, and becoming.

It may be easy to put your academic studies on the backburner, but don't. Your studies, as boring and tedious as they may seem or actually be, are part of what will help you succeed in life. But don't forget about people. Continue to build relationships are surround yourself with people who will encourage you, tell you the hard truths, and walk with you through it all.

Not all stress is bad. Some look at stress and see it as an unsurpassable barrier to peace. Others see it as a motivation to success.

It's okay to go to bed early now and then. Sleep is amazing when you get enough of it (but not too much). Naps are also beautiful things.

You will make mistakes. You will have regrets. But sometimes the quickest way to the right path means walking back to the fork in the road where you took the wrong turn.

This is not all there is. Life goes on, and time heals, grows, and changes. Don't let one small thing keep you from fighting for what's worth it.

Christmas Tree

Now that Halloween is over, it's time to focus on the Holiday Season. Don't get me wrong, I think Thanksgiving is great and can't wait for it, but nothing gives me greater joy than watching Freeform's 25 Days of Christmas, lighting peppermint scented candles, decking the halls, and baking gingerbread cookies. So while we approach the greatest time of the year, let's watch the 15 best Christmas movies of all time.

6 Signs You Are An English Major

There are various stereotypes about college students, most of which revolve around the concept of your major. Unfortunately, we often let stereotypes precede our own judgments, and we take what information is immediately available to us rather than forming our own opinions after considerable reflection. If I got a dollar for every time my friends have made a joke about my major I could pay my tuition. One stereotype on campus is the sensitive, overly critical and rigid English major. Here are six telltale signs you are one of them.

27 Things 'The Office' Has Taught Us

"The Office" is a mockumentary based on everyday office life featuring love triangles, silly pranks and everything in between. It can get pretty crazy for just an average day at the office.

When you were little, your parents probably told you television makes your brain rot so you wouldn't watch it for twelve straight hours. However, I feel we can learn some pretty valuable stuff from television shows. "The Office," while a comedy, has some pretty teachable moments thrown in there. You may not know how to react in a situation where a co-worker does something crazy (like put your office supplies in jello) but thanks to "The Office," now you'll have an idea how to behave ifsomething like that should happen.

Here are just a few of the things that religious Office watchers can expect to learn.

Being pre-med is quite a journey. It’s not easy juggling school work, extracurricular activities, volunteering, shadowing, research, and MCAT prep all at the same time. Ever heard of “pain is temporary, but GPA is forever?” Pre-meds don’t just embody that motto; we live and breathe it. Here are 10 symptoms you’re down with the pre-med student syndrome.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

Books were always about understanding for me, about learning the way someone else sees, about connection.

High School And College Sucked All Of The Fun Out Of Reading

I keep making this joke whenever the idea of books is brought up: "God, I wish I knew how to read." It runs parallel to another stupid phrase, as I watch my friends struggle through their calculus classes late at night in our floor lounge: "I hope this is the year that I learn to count." They're both truly idiotic expressions, but, when I consider the former, I sometimes wonder if there's some truth to it.
