Being a freshman in college while in the 21st century is particularly interesting (at least for me). When my parents and grandparents were growing up, College wasn’t necessarily talked about as another pathway to getting a job and being successful. I’m so lucky that College was talked about a lot for me growing up. In fact, that wasn’t my main goal throughout life up until now. Everything I worked for in my life, was to get to this point.
College, for me, has become not only an outlet but my ticket to bigger and better things. Meaning the ticket to not only having a successful career but gaining as much knowledge that I can about issues that I am passionate about. Being in college has taught me so much about myself and who I am as a person. I’ve found my niche and I’ve figured out my passions and what makes me happy.
As a college freshman in the 21st century, I’ve learned that now, more than ever, I need to not only work hard and become successful but that it’s okay to fail sometimes. Also, being a college student in the 21st century has taught me that self-care is so important. There are so many issues happening around the world in people of color communities that have inspired me to choose the major that I have now (which is Women’s and Gender Studies).
I hope that as I further my college career, that I’ve continued to not only push boundaries but challenge myself as a thinker. In today’s world, I think that there are so many issues that have remained under the radar and I think that as a student, I can work to hopefully bring them to the light. Also, I hope that I can help spark change. As a college student in the 21st century, I hope to challenge myself, the world, and others to make this world a better place for everyone.
If you are a college freshman in the 21st century like I am, I encourage you to push boundaries and challenge yourself as well. Imagine if we all did that. What would the world be like? If we don't challenge ourselves, we wouldn't ever know our own potential. I hope that my advice encourages those who read this article and that it will inspire you to do the same as I have.
