Before I moved into the University of Oklahoma, I had no idea what to expect. No one in my family has left home for college, so there was really no basis for what I was to expect, except what I've seen on TV and in movies. On the screen, college is always made out to be this place where young adults go to escape their parents' control and act completely wild. Let me reassure you that this isn't just a dramatization as I thought before; college is actually like that for some people. As someone who is in college to study instead of party, my first week has put me in complete culture shock, but I'm working through it.
When I got my housing assignment, I was excited to see I got into my preferred housing, one that offers single rooms, but was pretty disappointed when I found out I had roommates. I was even less amused when I found out they were all rushing: a term I had never heard before, but have become well acquainted with over the past two weeks. With them being my roommates, I think I now know more Greek words than 1450 BC Greece, but that's beside the point. I wouldn't have anything against my roommates if sorority life wasn't all they talk about. I completely understand that it is very time-consuming and a lifestyle of its own, but does that mean you can't be interested in anything except your "sisters" and the alpha, beta, whatever's frat party? Since when does the weekend begin on Wednesday? I have so many questions, but, nonetheless, I mind my own business, keep an open mind, and have my noise-canceling headphones on deck when it becomes too much for my introverted ears to bear.

On a more positive note, I'm beginning to find my own friend group with views and reservations more along the lines of my own while also enjoying my courses and professors (I'll let you know how well I'm enjoying my classes once midterms come around, though). My navigation of the campus is still a little hit-or-miss, but it's getting there. Oh, and I also attend a school with the most beautiful architecture and landscaping, so getting lost isn't too bad.
