With the regular season ending, the College Football Playoff committee made the last of their rankings Sunday. The playoff was set with Clemson vs Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl and Alabama vs Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl. These are four great teams in the national semi-finals, and it should make for a very exciting playoff.
The Orange Bowl is big for both teams and not just to make it to the championship game. Clemson will use this game to really justify their season in front of a national audience and show that they truly belong in the playoffs. Oklahoma will try and get their revenge as Clemson blew them out when they faced each other last year. That 40-6 game will definitely be one of the main motivations for the Sooners. Sooner quarterback Baker Mayfield has been red hot as of late, but the question is if he can keep it up against a tough Clemson defense. Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson will hope to build on his performance against North Carolina in the ACC championship where he really made a statement for his Heisman chances. When it's all said and done, I believe Oklahoma advances in a very close game 31-24.
In the Cotton Bowl, Alabama will rely on Heisman hopeful Derrick Henry to carry the load as he has been all year. He's had a total of 90 carries and 460 rushing yards in just the past two games, and helped the Tide reach the position they are in. Michigan State will look to ride the momentum of knocking off previously unbeaten Iowa in the Big 10 championship game and hope quarterback Connor Cook can keep his consistent play going in the Cotton Bowl. I believe Alabama's defense will be too strong for the Spartans to handle, and they advance to the championship over Michigan State 34-17.
I predict the championship in Arizona will be Alabama vs Oklahoma. Two great teams squaring off on the biggest of stages. I do think Alabama's defense will be able to slow down this Sooner offense, and coach Nick Saban won't allow a repeat of the 2014 Sugar Bowl where the Sooners beat the Tide 45-31. I think the Crimson Tide will take home the championship with a 31-28 victory over Oklahoma.
