Writing Through Finals Stress

We have to remember to take care of ourselves despite the stress

Writing Through Finals Stress

For most, it would seem that having an Odyssey deadline (an additional deadline on top of all the other assignments, finals, and craziness going on during this time of year) would be a major stressor. However, somehow I am realizing it is the opposite.

Right now, my mind is basically fried from studying for hours on end with small breaks only for eating and YouTube searches for good music to study to. It's almost 2 AM and my article is already late. Extremely late. But this is the last task I have told myself I will complete tonight. This is different from studying or fulfilling other deadlines. When I hit submit, there is no grade awaiting me--no "wrong answers". It's my own time to create my own work without worrying about a grade or discouraging feedback. I can write about what I want and even though the only thing I can think about right now is my own stress, I'm allowed to write about that. There's no rules here.

That's the beautiful thing about having "me time". It is so essential in all our lives but when things get crazy, like right now for most of us college students, we simply don't find time for it. For me, I'm doing my best to wake up earlier to have some additional morning "me time" and ending my nights with "me time" because if I go to bed immediately after studying, I will lie in bed thinking about everything I didn't study or whether or not I remember what I just studied.

Stress takes over the mind and it proceeds to take over the body as well. This has become very obvious as I haven't worked out for weeks even though working out used to be my "me time". My only snacks in the dorm are kit-kats, kettle corn, and nutter-butters. Add on top of that about 10 Starbucks DoubleShot Espressos. My body is starting to take the toll.

Finals season is hard mentally, emotionally (in preparation of going home), and physically but we have to remember to take care of ourselves. Obviously, I'm far from perfect and have to remind myself this simple goal (taking care of myself) every time the stress piles up, but hopefully with time, we will be able to remember that the best way to succeed and survive through finals season is by ensuring we remember to put aside time for ourselves.

And with that, I wish all the college and high school students taking finals soon the best of luck!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

10 Things Only Equestrians Understand

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
