The College Experience

It goes beyond the books.

The College Experience
Chris Doss

Four (five) years. Thousands of dollars in loans. Books, portfolios, reports, and projects. All which earned me the valuable document known as a college diploma. The education I received definitely influenced my career direction, thanks to some very influential and knowledgeable professors and peers which were second to none.

However what collaborates with the education and is more cherished, in my opinion, than the school education is the education you receive through your experiences. What colleges don't advertise is the time you are going to spend off campus with friends who last a lifetime. Through all the good times and bad times, the ups and downs, and everything in between, you find out more about yourself as an individual and your supporting cast that you never thought you would discover.

Many people attend college, but everyone's stories are different. Many people go to the bar, the games, the clubs, the library, the scenic destinations; but every place has its unique twist. The course material you learn will be reiterated day in and out as your career progresses, but the friends you make will constantly be a growing connection with more memories being created as time moves on.

If there's a piece of advice worth a d*mn I can give to any incoming college students, this is it:

Don't sell yourself short. Make the most out of the time you have while learning where your life is heading. Try new things. Travel in your spare time. Drink beer. Treat your professors respectfully, but not so much like a dictator; be friendly with them. If you need a job, wait tables - it helps with public speaking and shows you can handle money; and a lot of your friends will be in the same boat. Don't be afraid to take risks. There will be hard times, either with people and relationships or with school work; just stay confident and push through it, this is how you learn to deal with adversity and stress. Drink beer. Don't expect a reasonably close parking spot (ESPECIALLY if you go to Coastal). Equip yourself with a rain jacket/umbrella (again, ESPECIALLY if you go to Coastal). And you know, do good in school and all that.

Bob's Burgers
Adult Swim

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.
