5 Ways To Stay Healthy In College That Actually Work
Rachel Klumpp

We all have heard the scary rumors of the freshman 15. As much as we want to think it isn't real it most definitely is. We live on a campus with dining halls that actually serve really good food, with sorority and fraternity houses that spoil us with great meals, buses and joy rides that will take us anywhere on campus which makes it really hard to stay fit. It becomes so easy to get the freshman fifteen without even realizing that you're being unhealthy. It has become my new year's resolution to be healthier and here are some tips that are gonna help me and can help you too.

Fried Friday is amazing, but put a salad on the side

We all love a good Fried Friday, the chicken nuggets, mozzarella sticks, fried mac 'n cheese and so much more. It's what we look forward to at the end of every week. However, yes, it is nice to treat ourselves, but putting a salad with Fried Friday doesn't hurt anyone. We need nutrition and vegetables with all that fried food. Add that salad to your meal. There are so many good things to add to it to make it taste good. I know my sorority and all the dining halls have a salad bar with every lunch and dinner use it to your advantage. We paid for it already might as well use it.

Walking everywhere even though you don't want to

I know it's hard to wake up with just enough time to walk to class. It's so easy to just wake up throw some clothes on and hop on the bus to class. However, walking to class is a lot better for your health. We all are just going to go home sit on the couch, watch tv and do homework so walking now can be your exercise for the day. You get to enjoy the beautiful campus that made you want to go to school here and be fit at the same time. Most likely you'll get to run into a friend on the way to class and have a nice conversation too. Take the time to walk to your classes and start your day off right.

All-nighters don't need to be every night

We are all college students pulling that all-nighter to finish that paper or study for that test, it doesn't seem like a big deal because we will just have caffeine in the morning, but it is. Caffeine not only adds so many extra calories, but it doesn't actually help. It's like sugar, we get put on this high right after we have, but then after a while, we just end up being more tired. Plus, when you don't get enough sleep your body produces more hunger hormones and increases your appetite which causes you to eat more than necessary. So overall, not getting enough sleep isn't healthy because you aren't getting the rest you need and you are just gaining unnecessary calories.

The gym on campus is free!

I get that when we get home from class all we want to do is sit on the couch and watch TV. But, before you sit down to put on your cute sneakers and go to the gym. Pinterest is your best friend. Look up some fun 30-minute workouts for you to do at the gym. Taking that break before doing your homework which will give you a fresh mind to sit down and grind out the school work. Take advantage of the free gym because when you go home for break it won't be there.

Get that cute water bottle and bring it everywhere

Spending that $10 on a cute water bottle with being so beneficial in your life. Not only does it help the environment by using a reusable water bottle, but its healthy too. Filling a water bottle up multiple times a day with cold water helps boost your metabolism. Your body works to warm the water up and at the same time is burning more calories to help you lose weight. Add some fresh fruit in it and it can taste good too! It's healthy, it helps burn calories and it helps the environment all in one water bottle!

Changing up and trying a least one of these things will help you realize that working out is not too bad after all.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
