While walking on a college campus, one will see many things: professors walking to class, students talking to their friends, cars bustling about...and squirrels. Everywhere.
The squirrels on campus are a whole other breed. Most squirrels are terrified of people. They stay far away, and whenever they hear any sort of noise they jump and run away.
However, the one thing I have noticed on my college campus and many others is that campus squirrels are crazy. Just the other day, I was on campus and a squirrel came really close to me and a group of friends. Another time, I was walking to class and a squirrel bolted out in front of me, almost running over my foot.
These squirrels are not only crazy, but they are almost comfortable with the students. They are comfortable running right by the students and walking up to them.
I asked people on campus about stories they have with the campus squirrels and here are some of them:
The Following Squirrel:
"My freshman year, I was walking next to Smith towards the library. It was the end of the semester, so not a lot was going on on campus. It was the last day before people had to move out. I saw this squirrel that was just staring at me. I got bold and I kind of made that noise you make at cats (I don't know how else to describe the noise), and it started following me. It didn't chase me by any means, but it definitely was curious after I was crazy enough to try interacting with it."
The Mating One:
"I was walking back to my apartment from my friend's apartment, and all of a sudden these two squirrels ran right in front of me. They were chasing each other and mating. It was a weird experience."
The Noisy Squirrel:
"I was sitting on a bench eating, and a squirrel was sitting on a tree branch crying. It was so weird because I did not think squirrels even made noise. Here this one was close to me and whining."
The Blueberry Eater:
"One time I was sitting on campus and my friend was feeding a squirrel blueberries. He would put the blueberry in front of the squirrel and the squirrel would take it, almost like a dog. It was one of the weirdest experiences I have had with a campus squirrel."
Many of the campus squirrels are crazy. Adorable, but crazy. Who knows why?
