I couldn’t be more proud to call myself a Jayhawk right now because we are headed to the FINAL FOUR baby!! I may not be the most knowledgeable in sports, but if there is one thing I do know it’s that no one celebrates a win quite like KU students.
Last Sunday night while watching the KU v. Duke game everyone went through an absolute rollercoaster of emotions. From confidence to doubt, excitement to fear, there was no emotion left untouched during that game.
But a KU fan never loses hope.
Deep down inside I think we all knew we would come out on top somehow. It was a bumpy road to get there, but we always make it in the end.
You could find most people in one of three places to be watching the game Sunday evening. The Bull, the Wheel or the Hawk. KU’s very own holy trinity of bars. Dressed to the very best in jerseys and Kansas shirts, fans were watching and drinking to every second of the game.
Made a basket? I’ll drink to that.
Did Duke make a basket? Drink because I’m stressed now.
Is timeout called? I’ll take a drink now so I don’t miss anything later.
From blocks away, you could hear the buzz of people at the bars. The closer the game was to an end, the louder everyone got. But let me tell you now. Everyone in Omaha could probably hear us all the way in Lawrence the second we knew we had won.
If you have ever been to a home KU basketball game in Allen Fieldhouse you know it’s a madhouse. Well, the entire city of Lawrence turned into a madhouse Sunday night. People immediately left the bars and started running towards Mass. Street (the main street in downtown Lawrence for those who don’t know).
Imagine hundreds of college students running down the middle of the street, all coming together to bask in the glory of another win
You’d think this would be our local police departments worst nightmare right?
Wrong.
In fact, our police department was live tweeting after the game giving us all the go-ahead to storm down Mass. Street and celebrate. They announced on twitter the street was being shut down until further notice to let KU fans do what we do best.
Celebrate a major win like there is no tomorrow.
There are reports already saying that the City of Lawrence is planning on closing down Mass. Street starting a 5 a.m. on Saturday for the game. The city is ready, the police department is ready, the fans are ready, and most importantly I think our team is ready.
I mean it when I say no one celebrates a win quite like Lawrence does. We go all out, there is no option of staying home. We will believe in our team until the day we die. So while we are still riding the high from Sunday’s game all I have to say is:
We. Want. Nova.
