To My College Best Friends

To the best friends that I’ve met in college,

Thank you. You have shown me that a coffee run can be so much more than just a coffee run. Thank you for fielding more than one tear-filled crisis that, in the long-run, wasn’t even a big deal to begin with. Between gym days and dinner dates, I am so glad that I have met you.

I have learned that college is so much more than just going to class and taking copious notes. College is about trying your best in life, and I am inspired every day because of the friends that I have made. I sincerely hope that our adventure together doesn’t end when we inevitably move away from each other — but I am sure this isn’t just wishful thinking. Being away at university has taught me how to make friendships that mean so much more than just partying every weekend. Because of you, I have learned how to make relationships that are wholesome and emotionally healing. We have gotten to know each other so well, and I am so grateful for that. We no longer need words to communicate, and this is an experience that I am not sure I could get with anyone else.

Late nights spent on each other’s couches have never meant more to me than when they’re with you. From mancala to pigs (we all secretly hate that game), and hard sweat sessions and ice cream, we have been there for each other building a friendship so beautiful that even a sunset on the beach in mid-July can’t compare.

It’s been quite the adventure with you, and I wouldn’t have this with anyone else. We are learning together every day how to love ourselves for who we are, and that is something that even the best college course couldn’t even teach us. We are learning how to build lasting and meaningful relationships through each other, and I find myself thinking about this from time to time. I am so very thankful for being surrounded by such love and care.

I am not sure that I could survive the rest of my college experience without you. I treasure our walks, runs, and talks — not to mention drives around town. Our cars have become our own therapy sessions, concert halls, and meeting rooms. We have set goals, and broken them together as a team. Making friends has never been my forte; I always tended to be a drifter. Being friends with you has been so effortless, I know that it is nothing less than what we could consider ‘meant to be’. Few people can come into your life and change everything for the better, and so quickly!

I truly can’t wait for this coming semester, and for our adventure to continue. Classes will start soon, and I am so excited to work together studying as well as goofing off. I look forward to the many goals that I know we will shatter in these coming months. I am excited to the food that we will cook and try, for the coffee we will drink, and for the conversations. I even look forward to the nights where we don’t need anything.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.
