College And Anxiety

At some point, we've all experienced it.

To my anxiety: You hold me back from so many things. You impact me in small ways and in big ways. You make me thankful for self-checkout lines when I go to a supermarket. You cause me to be terrified of talking to new people. You make me incapable of talking on the phone to anyone other than my immediate family and close friends. How can I live a comfortable, successful life with you in the way? How can I connect with people or make a grand impression at my dream job interview when i'm so scared of doing something wrong that I can't be myself? You make college very difficult but I am a work in progress of trying to rid myself of you. I am better than before, but I still have a long ways to go.

Luckily, I am not alone. As I have began to experience the world a little more, I notice that there are many other people who live with the same obstacle as I do. Other people also lie awake at night analyzing every movement and gesture made throughout the day and if something went wrong, the only thing we can do is dwell on it. Overthinking is your worst enemy.

Throughout my journey, I have learned many things. Foremost, I have learned that I cannot push myself to do things I am not ready to do, and this goes for anyone with anxiety. Some might say “well, how are you ever going to overcome it if you don't do things you're anxious about?” And to that I say, it's all about progress. Take small steps. If you do something you're far from being comfortable with, then it could go poorly and that can only end with you becoming discouraged.

Also, realize that when you're talking to someone new, most of the time they are just as nervous as you. Just be yourself, and worst case scenario: if they don't like you, then why do you want to be in their life anyways? If you show people who you are, chances are, they will accept you.

“Wherever we are, it is but a stage on the way to somewhere else, and whatever we do, however well we do it, it is only a preparation to do something else that shall be different.”

- Robert Louis Stevenson

To overcome anxiety, you must practice a new mindset and explore new opportunities. Get out of your comfort zone, even if it isn't but a small gesture. Like I stated before, you shouldn't force yourself to start doing something that you're far from ready to do. Start small. For example, I recently just started writing for the Odyssey. I love writing, but I have always been too much of a nervous wreck to ever portray my thoughts to other people. Since I've been here, at VCU, I have been making small changes to overcome my anxiety and do the things I love and want to do. Only good has come from it.

Remember to strive for progress, not perfection.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
