There's been a mistake. 'Moonlight,' you guys won best picture. Nah, just kidding. But seriously, there's been a mistake. The name of the writer is wrong. My name is Mitch Burris, and I'm a Film major at Rutgers University. Anyway, 2017s been a bummer year so far, but at least we got some pretty sickin' movies. Not to mention, 'Dunkirk' is coming out soon, and Quentin Tarantino just announced he's gonna make a movie on the Manson family murders. But for now, here are my favorite movies of 2017 so far.
5. Free Fire
This obscure indie film is a Tarantino-esque, guns-a-blazing kind of movie that should be made more in Hollywood. Nevertheless, I'm just happy that it was made. This movie was a lot of fun. It's got sharp, witty, Tarantino-esque dialogue, and it's got fun, gory, Tarantino-esque action. Also, the chick who won the Oscar for 'Room' is in it. (I haven't seen 'Room' yet, but it's definitely on my list.)
4. Get Out
I was really excited to see this after I found out that one of the guys from 'Key & Peele'wrote and directed it. (That show is hilarious!) This movie is great, too. It's really funny, it does suspense almost as well as 'Inglorious Basterds', and it has a lot of social commentary. Also, the chick from 'Girls' is in it. (I haven't seen 'Girls' yet, but it's definitely on my list.)
3. Logan
I got to see 'Logan' in 70 mm, black-and-white, and it was awesome. This is such an edgy movie, and I'm not just talking about Wolverine's hands! Marvel decided to finish off the glorious character of Wolverine with a movie that is slotted for all the Oscars. If it were up to me, all superhero films would be rated R (although this is a great year for superhero movies overall), and this movie would be the platform for all of them. Tarantino.
2. Baby Driver
This is from the guy who directed 'Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World' and 'Hot Fuzz', two of the best movies of the century so far. (What is up with your list, New York Times? 'Boyhood' at eight? That movie sucked!) 'Baby Driver' is as much fun as a Tarantino movie, and it has a great cast. You have Don Draper himself, Jon Hamm, and Keyser Söze himself, Kevin Spacey. The only bad actor here is the lead, Ansel Elgort, who was in 'The Fault In Our Stars', which my ex-girlfriend dragged me to see with her when it came out. Even so, 'Baby Driver' is a great movie.
1. Quentin Tarantino's Untitled Manson Family Project
OK. So maybe the film hasn't been released yet, and maybe the film hasn't even been made yet, and maybe it hasn't even been given the title yet, but every serious film fan knows that this movie is gonna be the best movie since 'Django Unchained' (TBH, 'The Hateful Eight' was pretty lame.) You got a cult leader, and you got Tarantino. What more to ask for? For sure, my number one.
