For most of us, going away to college is the scariest, most terrifying thing we've done so far. To think that anybody would be completely fine with leaving home and living without your parents for the first time, is crazy. Everybody has to adjust. There's a transition period when you first get to school which is really formative. All four years of college are pretty formative. The best way to get the most out of your time, is to push yourself out of your comfort zone. College offers us so many ways to do this, so many that we can't get to them all in the short time we're at school. So, my recommendations would be: taking the stranger classes, talking to people, and exploring the campus.
While there's nothing wrong with coming to college without a major in mind, some come in with a strategy on what classes they're going to take, what they're going to be involved in, and so on. Regardless of the approach you choose to take, I strongly recommend that you take a class that has nothing to do with the major you've chosen or are leaning towards, a class that doesn't really align with your usual interests. The classroom atmosphere is the perfect place to learn. In a classroom, you're forced to learn. So, it's easy to absorb and really get into the subject. On your own, you have to rely on yourself to stay on top of learning something and getting it down. With this in mind, taking a class like Theater, or Art, or even an interesting english class, would broaden your horizons so much. You might find that you really enjoy something that you've never been exposed to. You could pick up a hobby that stays with you for a while. Taking a class like this allows you to learn about something new, and about yourself.
College is the only time in your life when everyone that lives around you is your age. Everybody you pass on the street has to have a ton in common with you, because they're going through the same things you are, more or less. Taking a few minutes to introduce yourself to someone opens up a whole network of relationships that can help you in the future, and build friendships that can last a long time.
There is always something going on around campus that you haven't heard about. Exploring the campus will allow you run into these less publicized events. Also, the more places you go, the more people you can run into, and the more places you have to hang out. You might find a new place to study, or a favorite place to wind down. Expanding your world can never be anything but a good thing.
Overall, college serves two purposes. It provides an education and a degree that you can use to advance yourself in whatever you choose to do. But also, college can help you grow as an individual, make you vulnerable to things that you might never have come into contact with, and make relationships that can last a lifetime. You just have to take advantage of the opportunity to get out of your comfort zone that college offers.
