Colin Kaepernick: Get Over Yourself

Why are you not supporting the country who gave you so much oppurtunity?

I understand that some of you may have no idea who Colin Kaepernick even is and that is okay because, until now, he was basically irrelevant in media unless it was something regarding the San Francisco 49ers. Kaepernick has decided to take his entitled self and use his image to become a spokesperson against decades of racism. For some reason Kaepernick thinks that since he is an "influential" figure he can go about sitting down during the national anthem before his pre-season games this year.

Kaepernick believes that by sitting down he is protesting the oppression and the racism in the country against black people. He states that this country, the anthem and the flag instigate the hatred between white people and black people. What people need to know is that Kaepernick, on top of being half white, was adopted by two white parents from the United States because his parents didn't feel like they were competent to keep him. On top of that, Kaepernick was fined in 2014 for calling another player on the opposing team the "n" word during a game. So someone please explain to me how a man who is a product of "white society" has any right and also any ground for sitting down during the anthem because he is so against the white people of this nation.

Yes, I am not blinded by the truth. I see the racism and I see the injustices. However, I personally think that if it was the other way around, I would not want someone who is entitled, attention-seeking, and isn't affected by the cause to be the "spokesperson." Kaepernick isn't even helping the cause in which he is supposedly fighting for. How is sitting down during the national anthem at all lighting a fire to help the movement that is happening right now? Is it helping by teaching young people to sit against the country that they live in? I believe the whole point of the active movement is to have rights, be equal and fully stand together as a country. So, Kaepernick, how is sitting down during the anthem helping that happen?

Does he realize how many people, white and black, have died for this country to fight for the freedom in which this country gives us? This country could be one that kills people off for speaking up, or should I say sitting down. This country, and the first amendment, are the reason why Kaepernick is able to sit down during the anthem and have nothing happen to him. Yes, he has the right to do this, but he only has the right to do this because of this amazing country that he lives in yet so much despises (seemingly all of a sudden).

Kaepernick should really open his eyes and truly see what is going on around him. Without America, he wouldn't even be in the position he is now as a professional football player. I mean, his football career is going down the toilet anyway, but he should stop and realize that sitting for the anthem isn't starting the fire in which he wanted. Instead, it started a fire of more hatred and disgust towards him than he's probably had before.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
