We have probably all heard of the controversy that has arisen due to Colin Kaepernick’s refusal to stand up for the playing of the United States national anthem. Numerous people have come to defend his action, saying that it is for an understandable cause. Other have pointed out that his actions, or perhaps better stated his lack of action, have caused them to feel as if he is insulting the country as a whole and even the US Army.
This is not the first time that a celebrity or public figure has done something to show solidarity with a movement or with a cause and consequently received backlash from the public.
However, it is interesting to me how each time a celebrity takes a stance on an issue that might be sensitive to the public, the debate that ensues surrounds the method in which the statement was made. People are quick to take sides on whether that action is understandable, if there should be repercussions from the industry, if it’s protected under freedom of speech, etc. When will we be courageous enough to tackle the issue itself, rather than the method that said person is using to shed light on it?
Why is the debate that followed Colin Kaepernick’s “boycotting” of the national anthem not about systematic oppression? Instead, the debate is about whether he should leave while the anthem is playing and then return once it’s over and about guessing what repercussions will come of his actions.
This speaks to the fact that as a general rule, individuals will always find a way to divert from the pressing issues that said public figure was trying to address. I think we should stop spending our time debating things that aren’t as important, and get back to the topic that was meant to be addressed.
