Is there a coffee shortage?

Before you do that, here is the answer. It is inevitable.

Unfortunately over the couple decades has the demand for coffee drastically increased and continues. Countries known for their consumption of teas are growing demand for specialty coffee beans.

Arabica and Robusta beans are two varieties of coffee that are imported globally. Coffee companies that brag about their unique taste generally use arabica coffee beans. Fox News published a story in 2015 showing Arabica beans dropping 30% due to the favorable months. Unfortunately there hasn't been enough rainfall in the past couple years to compensate for the demand of coffee.

YES!! Stock up now guys. Prices are considerably low in comparison to their projected increase in cost as scarcity grows over the next 3-5 years. Get it now while you can. Temperatures and differences in precipitation throughout the years have been studied and are hindering the coffee business. In the future we can expect a rise in cost. Huffington Post has an article with studies showing the decrease in production of numerous crops in the past few years. As a result, by 2050-2080 the planet will not be capable of inhabiting coffee beans, chocolate, bananas, peanuts ( aka peanut butter), ingredients for craft beers, and more importantly COFFEE!

Why is this happening to us? Climate change, and it just isn't happening to the food we love but nature as we see it. This past August was the hottest August in 136 years of modern record keeping. Already sounds familiar if we recall this past summer. Since 1880 the Earth's increase in temperature has increased 1.7 degrees. Research shows that every half degree added is going to affect agriculture in what we can or can't grow. Carbon dioxide which comes from the industrial age and motor vehicles is affecting the Earth's atmosphere allowing changes in temperature, and weather to occur. The sea level has risen 3.4 millimeters per year. Without a doubt can we say climate change is real.

Yes, it is natural for the planet to go through stages of warmer and cooler temperatures than normal, but in the past 50 years has there been many unexplained factors. Because of the lack of snowfall Earth will eventually lose fresh water including the fish inside. Storms will continue to get stronger and we'll experience hotter days. As the oceans warm up so does our ice caps which melt and cause the rise in sea level. This will affect the animals that are losing land ice (polar bear), and fish that aren't able to live in warmer waters. Cities such as New York City are currently termed for experience severe surge and coastal storms that could happen once per decade. Dangers in rising sea levels puts many communities in fear of permanently leaving their homes. Slowly climate change is depleting the planet of what it needs to sustain all types of life. How long will it be before we contribute in the extinction of our own race?

Luckily someone has a plan, Starbucks. In 2015, The Costa Rica Star reported that Starbucks purchased a Costa Rican farm to grow Arabica beans and experiment with hybridized trees to withstand harsh climate and weather conditions. The research being done will be able to eventually help farmers in the future to prevent crops from dying off.

Kudos for looking out, Starbucks.

The Environmental Protection Agency doesn't seem to think its too late to make a difference. All it takes is the governments, communities, individuals, and businesses to make the right decisions that make strides in eliminating greenhouse gas pollution. By everyone committing to a 'greener' world will these decisions reduce the gases we are emitting and lowering risk of these future consequences we have talked about. Everything that can be done for climate change will result in cleaner, healthier air.

So what can we do? Spreading awareness to the people around you can influence a community to make these important decisions that can change how people think about global warming. The facts are all laid out for us, Now, it's up to us ( the current generation) to figure out what we should do about it. As science creates more methods to combat Earth's illness, it is our responsibility as the people who caused this to be aware of habits or practices among society that contribute to harming our ecosystem. We can stop it. We can change the track we are on. We can save COFFEE!!!

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
