Virginia is like a gold mine when it comes to great coffee and coffee shops. Growing up in southwest Virginia, I have learned to love and find certain places with the best coffee. Once you have a sip from any of these places, you will not want to go to Dunkin' Doughnuts again.

1. Land of a Thousand Hills Coffee company

Although this is a chain, there is one located in Daleville, Virginia. Not only do they supply amazing coffee, but treats as well. You can indulge in truffles, fudge, cookies and so much more. They are a chain that is centered around a good cause. You can read their story here.

2. Mill Mountain Coffee and Tea

Hands down, Mill Mountain is the best coffee place in Southwest Virginia. They are a chain as well, with just a few stores centered around Roanoke. Every shop that I have stepped in I am surrounded with good vibes from the staff and the way each shop looks. You can find yourself here hanging out on a couch with friends, chatting up the staff, or just listening to the good music they play. Cozy up with either a hot Egg Nog Latte or a cold Espresso Cooler. I promise you, once you have a drink from here you will never want to go to any other coffee shop for your daily buzz.

3. White Oak Tea Tavern

Located in Fincastle, Virginia, White Oak is known for their quaint little building and their amazing brews. Okay, maybe they don't sell coffee but, they had to get a mention. Their wonderful staff always try to make everyone feel at home. I highly recommend their Summer Stroll tea.

4. Starbucks

Typical, I know. However, I have recently grown to like Starbucks. It may be "Basic" but, they have killer Iced White Chocolate Mochas. If I am in an area I am unfamiliar with, I probably will stop by a Starbucks for a drink and a cake pop.

5. Radford Coffee Company

Although I have never been here, I have heard that Radford Coffee Company is an amazing place to hang out and get work done. Along with Land of a Thousand Hills, they are centered around a good cause as well.

Along with these beautiful places, I'm sure there are many more coffee shops around the area that deserve such recognition. These are just the few coffee shops that I have grown to love or would love to try out. You know what they say: "Coffee First, Schemes Later." -Leanna Renee Hieber. Take some of your time to indulge in some of the best coffee around Southwest Virginia.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
