Grab your thrift shop flannels. Throw on those funky wool socks. Maybe even throw on a beanie. Heck, put some Bon Iver on the radio to top it off. It's finally cold weather season in Fort Worth, and it's time to hit up the best coffee shops around town.
As you begin the slow trek across campus, the crisp cool winds nip at your face. You've got your favorite jacket or flannel on already, regardless of whether if it's actually cold enough or not yet. You've got a long day ahead of you. We're coming up on Thanksgiving break, which can only mean one thing for classes: study grind season is upon us. For whatever reason, teachers just love piling it on just before a break. What else is there to do to make our lives better than make you work all week for our break?
Sure, the library is easy to wind up at, but let's be honest, after spending seven hours grinding away the night before, you're getting a little stir crazy in club lib. And the usual Starbucks latte from the lib just isn't doing it anymore. And honestly, you know that you spent at least three hours of that seven talking to people around you about how bad your week is and how badly you don't want to be there. So where else better to get down to the real grind without distraction with a real cup of joe than your favorite local coffee shop?
Here are my top picks for the best coffee shops to be studying at as the cold weather season begins:
Casablanca Coffee (Downtown FW: 215 W 8th St)
This small, old-school coffee shop is the perfect place downtown to order a nice cup of coffee, served up with some good conversation. While not the largest coffee shop around, this location is in the heart of downtown and a perfect spot to go study solo. Although they only have a small counter on the left side of the shop, it's the perfect size for when you're trying to hammer out a last minute paper.
The Cup (3909 Camp Bowie Blvd)
The Cup is another small, stylish coffee shop with less of an eclectic and granola vibe than most coffee shops, and more of a sleek and quaint feel to it. The patios are great for studying in the cold when the sun is out, but heads up, because as of my last visit, there was no WiFi available, so be sure to have your phone able to create a hot spot. The pastries and food are great, and the service is even better. With a great cup of coffee, it's a nice and fresh way to get your studying done.
AVOCA (1311 W Magnolia Ave)
AVOCA holds true to the unique and granola coffee shop we all love. With a great selection of locally made pastries from Artisan Baking Co. to complement the incredible coffee brews they have, the vibes throughout the shop are perfect for studying. The music playlist is great for easy-going studying and the composition of artwork mixed with the furniture arrangements give this shop a great comforting appeal. Perfect for solo studying, but also a group-friendly environment.
Hint: each cup is made to order, meaning each is made through the drip coffee method. Also, if you're feeling sweet, try the hot chocolate. You won't be disappointed.
Brewed (801 W Magnolia Ave)
Another Magnolia Ave. favorite. Brewed perfectly captures the eclectic and unique feel that makes you feel like you're at home. The vibes perfectly capture the appeal that all coffee shop-goers thrive to find. With a diverse menu of unique coffee items followed by an incredible meal menu if you work through lunch or dinner time, Brewed is a comforting and diverse environment that you can spend countless hours at caught up in the grind.
Hint: try bundling up one evening, hitting up the back patio, and studying around the fire pits.
Buon Giorno (915 Florence St)
Coffee with a slight French twist on your surroundings. With the countless items throughout the coffee menu and easily the best hot chocolate in Fort Worth, this is my personal favorite place to get down to studying. The pastries and small meals are perfect snack-size portions to keep you going and the coffee is perfectly roasted and served up with a smile. Good vibes all around and perfect for studying solo or in a small group.
Hint: they also have an acoustic performer occasionally for some live study tunes.
Bonus:
Woodshed Smokehouse (3201 Riverfront Dr)
Woodshed, while well-known for its incredible BBQ, also has a great cup of coffee with good study vibes after peak hours. Open later in the evening, it's best getting there around 9 p.m. or so, when the fire pits are out and the crowd is died down. There is often a live acoustic singer playing soothing music or great covers to study to. Curl up with a book next to a fire pit or study away, this is a hidden in plain sight place to go study, and well worth checking out at the right times.
