A Lover of the Simple Things

For The Love Of Wanderlust

There are some simple things that just make my smile a little brighter each day. You can probably tell what they are with the title of this article. Don't get me wrong, I have some amazing people, my human dog Alvin Carter, and music to make my life so good and happy but it's the little things in life that can bring just a little extra joy. Those three little joys of mine is coffee, books, and the mountains.

Coffee:

Coffee is this black, fresh smelling, hot or cold, little cup of happiness. When you smell it, I instantly get a sense of "I can do this." It's a boost of caffeine through out your day, and a pick me up. Also coffee will help you out in college, and it will eventually become your best friend. Now, if you don't like coffee, I would advise you to learn. No.. I'm kidding but seriously find some good caffeine, you will thank me later.

Books:

Haven't you ever heard that saying "Knowledge is power," well it's true! Books can create another world for our minds to escape, and sometimes our minds need that. There is something cozy with just grabbing a book, cuddling up in your favorite spot, and just letting your mind go. That is one of my favorite parts of reading, not thinking about what is going on around me. A lot of people hate reading, and that probably comes with all the forced reading you have to do in school, but when you find the right book that fits you, then you realize how much fun it can be. Reading can provide a stress reliever, and really take your mind away from everything that is going on around you. So a shorter version from this is......read.

Mountains:

One word, one of the ultimate escapes, the mountains. My home. I love being at a college in the mountains is I can literally have a reality escape right in my backyard. Whenever I get super stressed out from friends, school, work, or anything I drive up the mountain. I have always loved the outdoors, and breathing in fresh air offers such a refreshing feeling it can just take your mind away. People have their escapes, and really any type of nature will help, but I have loved the mountains since I can remember. It goes back to growing up camping, and it created this life long love for the outdoors. Nature is one simple thing in life, that just makes each day a little brighter.

Something I have learned in my nineteen years of life is, stop and smell the roses. (I know, I bet you have heard that saying). It will change your outlook on life if you do take the time for yourself, and the little things that make you happy in life. So remind yourself of the things you love the most, and remember to take the time for you. We all need it.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
