As an incoming freshman or a returning junior that wants to save a little money, one of the biggest decisions is where you are going to live during the school year. Here at CofC we have many good, and bad, options, so you better know what you're getting into before you sign that housing contract. This is all you need to know about housing at CofC and where you should be staying next year.
1. Rutledge Rivers
Gonna be honest before I did my research I had no idea what Rutledge even was. BUT IT IS AMAZING. The dorms are small but recently renovated in 2017 to provide more amenities in a small space, like 'Tiny House' on TLC. Besides the fabulous inside, it is located right in the middle of campus, a 5-minute walk from even the furthest point of campus. And it's hella affordable.
2. Warren
Warren has a great apartment style layout, with the ability to have a private room and only share a bathroom with one other person. The location is not ideal if you have a class in the education center, but its close to all the fun clubs and bars on King. Which is more important anyways.
3. George Street Apartments
Another great apartment style living situation, with a great location on campus. Right above Caviar and Bananas and steps away from the Cistern, it's absolutely ideal. However, these are almost exclusively for upperclassmen which is why they rank lower on the list because I can't live there HA.
4. Berry
My current home. My humble abode. It has a great suite setup with a spacious living area and bedroom. The location is close to Chick-fil-A and City Bistro, so you will never be far from a decent meal. However, Berry does have its problems, notice the rats and brown water that sometimes comes out of the sinks.
5. Liberty
Nicer than Berry in several ways, as it was the most recently built building. And it has the biggest dining hall right in the building, so that's a plus. It is probably the most social dorm on campus, a little too social in my opinion.
6. McAlister
McAlister is nice IF YOU GET A GOOD ROOM. Everyone knows that the higher you are in McAlister, the better the room as they have these beautiful windows that allow you a glimpse of the Charleston skyline. But the ground floor rooms are kinda crappy and dark.
7. College Lodge
This place has always given me the heeby geebies. It is for the more ~edgy~ kids on campus. It has these sketchy outdoor patios that remind me of a motel. And being right next to Calhoun Street I imagine will be like trying to sleep with "Cops" playing at full volume.
8. Kelly
Nice big apartment-style living, but the outdoor courtyard in the middle causes some hassle. AND NO ELEVATORS?? How is that even allowed? Can you imagine moving into the third floor on move-in day without an elevator- yeah me either.
9. McConnell
I have actually never met anyone that lives here, as it is basically located in a different universe than the rest of campus. The rooms don't even look like they are worth the walk, unless you like living with eight or more people. Personally, that's more friends than I have in college and that makes me uncomfortable.
10. Craig
An all-male dorm, first of all, how do we even have these many men on campus? I have seen like four since I have got here. I can't even imagine the smell that comes out of this dorm. But, it's not last on the list because at least it does not have a common floor bathroom, each suite has their own bathroom.
11. Buist
The worst dorm on campus. An all girls dorm, imagine the drama. We basically go to an all-girls school, so I really don't think making it female only was really necessary. AND THEY HAVE FLOOR BATHROOMS, GROSS!! It's like we go to some normal college...that is not why I chose CofC.
