Spring is just around the corner and the thing I'm most excited for is to coach my sister's recreational softball team. I have been coaching the past two years with my brother and it helps me relive my childhood.
Growing up playing a recreation sport was not always about winning or losing, instead it was about just having fun. Obviously, it was more fun winning. Being able to teach my sister and other kids the simple fundamental of the sport and teaching them sportsmanship gives me a lot of pride.
Last year, we lost almost all of our games and it frustrated me. Then, I saw the smiles on the faces of the girls when they hit the ball or made a play. That's when I remembered this was not about the winning or losing. This was about having fun.
Recreation sports are a chance for kids to enjoy the sport with any major pressures and it gives coaches a chance to teach sports they enjoy with the youth.
Coaching my sister is probably the best part because I'm able to yell at her without anyone saying anything. It reminds me of when my dad yelled at me even though he wasn't the coach. This gives me a chance to bond with not only my sister, but my brother who coaches with me and our other sister who does the book. This is one big family affair and I know the parents find it entertaining.
I love being apart of the drill and I love running them because it makes me feel young. Yes, I am young, but younger. I think this also helps the kids get more into it when they see their coach having a fun time.
Having teenagers coach recreation sports is good for the entire community. It gives them a chance to relive their youth and gives kids role models to look up too.
I can't wait until the season starts! I'm looking forward to another year of coaching and reliving my childhood!
