For the first time since the 2002 season, the Central Michigan Chippewas are 3-0 on the season in football. Central has defeated Presbyterian, Oklahoma State (who was ranked number 22 in the nation at the time), and UNLV. It has not been easy for the Chippewas to get to where they are now, Oklahoma State was a tough challenge and UNLV put up one heck of a fight. The Chippewas are hoping to keep their perfect record and win streak intact when they head out to Scott Stadium in Charolttesville, Virgina to take on the 0-3 Virginia Cavaliers.
Central is led by their second-year head coach John Bonamego who has definitely changed the way that opponents looked at the Chippewas for years. Before Bonamego arrived in Mount Pleasant to coach CMU, teams would look at their schedule and laugh when they saw Central on it, but not anymore. Coach Bonamego has and is putting Central on the map and building the program up. Every player has seen some sort of improvement since Bono arrived, but none more than their senior starting quarterback Cooper Rush. Rush was an average quarterback at best before Bonamego arrived on the scene, but since the coaching switch, Rush has been much better than ever before, especially this season. He is hoping to keep up his good play and lead his team to the MAC Championship.
If Central can beat Virgina, the only teams that they would have to worry about for the rest of the regular season would be two conference rivals: Toledo and Western Michigan. If the Chippewas can find a way to get a win against both of those teams, they should have no problem heading into the MAC Championship with a perfect record. Can the Chippewas use the momentum they have to their advantage to win the rest of their games? CMU students and alumni everywhere sure hope so.
