Close Encounters of the Third Kind

In my story, I had a rare sighting of odd alien creatures that I could communicate with. After being in the spotlight one night, my body was taken over like Richard Dreyfuss’s character Roy in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I kept drawing a weird object. It led me to a place here on Hastings College’s campus. Once I figured out what I was drawing, I went to the place. After a while, the bright lights appeared again with old friends and alien creatures.

Exiting the union, Thursday night, I walk back to my room after supper with my roommate Shae. The moon was rising up on the east side and the sun setting on the west. After going up three flights of stairs, I get out the rest of my homework that I have to finish. I then pack up my backpack up with folders and books for the next day. Around 8p.m. change to my workout clothes and head down to the gym. After an hour of a good workout, I pack up and head back to the room. Hearing the door shut behind me, I put my left earbud in to walk back to the dorm. I have the same route every night when I walk back. This night I was hearing a plane. Being in the middle of Hastings, Nebraska, it was rare to hear a plane. I ignored the sound and headed toward the stairs on the side of Taylor to call my youth leader.

After having a nice conversation with her, I stood up to walk down the stairs. As my feet hit the cement, beams of light shined on me. I did the wrong thing by looking straight up into the light. The light was mostly white but there was a few red and blue lights. I looked down so I would still have my eye sight. Looking around me, there was nobody to be seen. The trees were completely still. I had no idea what was going on. After five minutes, the lights went off and then there was nothing. I never have been that confused in my life. I did not know if it was God’s sign for me or if it was a dream.

Barging into my room, I was freaking out. My heart felt like it was beating out of my chest and I could not figure out what just happened. “Becca are you ok? Why are you freaking out? You need to calm down,” Shae said. I told her what just took place and she thought I lost my mind. She thought I was telling a fairy tale or a story to be weird. I took a shower and got ready for bed. I texted my best friend, Dasia, to tell her my story and she just laughed at me. She thought I was on something. I came to the conclusion of just going to sleep to see if things would get better in the morning.

As I got ready Wednesday morning, I felt like nothing had gone on the previous night. As we walked down to breakfast I asked Shae, “Did I come back last night telling a crazy story?” She told me that I did and she was wondering when I was going to bring that up. As we finished up breakfast, we both went our separate ways to class. In the middle of video fundamentals, I got my spiral notebook out like I always do. I really do not take notes instead write random stuff or sketch. That morning I started to sketch something odd. I did not know what I was sketching at all. When class was done I closed up my notebook and left the Gra Center.

When 2 p.m. rolled around, I was done with classes for the day. I grabbed my belongings out of my backpack and I opened up my notebook for video fundamentals to look at the picture I drew. When I looked at my other notebooks, I had the same drawing. As the day went on, the drawings got more detailed. I got out a sheet of copy paper to draw again. This time my hand would not stop drawing. My body was taken over to draw this odd thing. After 30 minutes, I sat back and looked at the drawing. I noticed my drawing was a place that I have seen. At the moment I could not remember where it was but I did know what it was. I tried doing my homework but I kept drawing over and over. My body was completely taken over to keep drawing this place.

Finally my body let me have it back. I laid out all the drawings to see the final product. Seeing everything together, I noticed what and where it was. It was the labyrinth by the flag pole. I decided to go there after supper and when I was done with homework. My body was shaky the whole night because I did not know what to expect.

When I arrived to the labyrinth, there was a nice breeze but not too cold. Nothing was strange about it. I went through the labyrinth and stood in the middle to pray. Once I followed the stones to exit, the bright lights appeared. I felt like someone was trying to abduct me. The thing with the bright lights decided to land in front of the chapel. I remained standing at the exit of the labyrinth watching a plane appear. As the plane opened up, there was a huge crowd that surrounded me. The plane opened up. I had no idea what was going to come out. The lights were shut off and I could see legs coming out. After awhile, I saw friends that I have not seen since middle school. I was so happy to see them. After my friends came out, these people with odd shaped heads came out. They were aliens and they wanted to talk to me so I went up into the ship to talk to them. The aliens spoke German and oddly I could understand them. They asked me, “tun Sie sich bei uns wieder nach oben in Raum gehen wollen?” (Do you want to go back up to space with us?) I told them I wanted to stay here in Hastings. I then said goodbye to my alien friends and went out of the ship. When I got out of the ship, there were tons of news reports and President Obama was waiting to talk to me. “You are the first person to have a face to face interaction with aliens. You can now answer a bunch of questions for everyone,” Obama said! It was an amazing feeling to talk to Obama, but more incredible feeling to have this relationship with aliens. I could then help the US and so many other countries have interaction with aliens. Humans and aliens can now communicate which could lead to amazing things for years to come.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
