Clinton, Tennessee is Home Sweet Home to Me

(And to you, and to you, and to you)

Clinton, Tennessee is Home Sweet Home to Me

This has nothing to do with Hillary Clinton. It does, however, have everything to do with one of the best towns in the South.

Here are 17 things you're familiar with if you've ever lived in Clinton, Tennessee.

1. You’ve been antique shopping.

2. You almost broke the ornament that has been passed down from generation to generation (that was probably bought at an antique store) when decorating the Christmas tree.

3. You’ve probably been asked to model for a local boutique. #ShopLocal

4. You’re proud to know that Clinton High School was the first in the nation to desegregate. https://www.tnvacation.com/vendors/the-clinton-twe...

5. You probably had “Mr. Alfred” as a janitor in elementary school (the only reason you remember him is because he gave you tons of candy on Fridays after school, not to mention—he was one of the Clinton 12).

6. Growing up, you discovered the Norris Dam, so from then on you tried to use the word “dam” in every sentence and justify your usage of that word by explaining, “No! Norris Dam!”

7. You secretly wish Hoskins Drugstore was a franchise, because you go to college hundreds of miles away, and all you really want in life is one of their milkshakes.

8. Whenever you hear the word “fair,” the man missing all of his teeth with dip rushing out of his mouth pops into mind, or you think of the best six days of summer. It’s probably the latter.

9. You were a poor high school student because you spent 75% of your paycheck on gas to make it to Knoxvegas. “Ugh, there’s nothing to do here!”

10. Until the Snowball Shack opened up.

11. Clinch River Classic is where you discover how knowledgeable your dads are about softball, even though you all live in a football town.

12. Paula Dean may have her own cooking show, but she obviously hasn’t visited the Valley Quick Pac. Have you seen their biscuits!?

13. There are only two types of people in this world: Dragons or Mavericks.

14. And by God, you best know the difference between the two.

15. If you’re a Southern Baptist, you probably Hammer’s.

16. Perkadeli’s is a low scale Panera with high quality food, and probably one of my favorite places to eat in town.

17. Dutch Valley is not home to the Dutch. It’s home to some of the most kind-hearted people this side of the Mississippi— who may or may not own a farm. Who knows, maybe they'll even allow you to ride their horse(s).

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
