Clean Plate

The perfect start to a "clean slate" in 2017.

In Latin, "tabula rasa" means clean slate, and I think we can all agree that's what we're looking for in 2017. There's tons of way you could take this - whether it be with relationships, school, or at work. To me, it means something different. Instead, I think fueling my body with a clean plate will result in a better year.

There comes a level of vulnerability to be able to admit that you're not giving yourself the nutrients in which you deserve. I'm such a "foodie" so when it comes to eating out or trying new foods, I don't even consider what I'm putting into my body. It's comparable to an addiction.

"Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry"

I won't lie, I have used food as motivation and a reward. It's so simple for me to say, "Well, if I do this then I can have a donut later" or something along those lines. I wouldn't ever admit to myself that it's close to being addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, but it is. An unhealthy diet leads to about 700,000 deaths per year, more than 6 times the amount of people that died in 2010 from alcohol and substance abuse!

The beginning of this year I vowed to myself to make better choices when it comes to what I'm eating. I started meal prepping and really looking into the ingredients in each of my purchases. I became a BeachBody coach and was given tons of tools to help me. One of the biggest thing I've taken from this experience thus far is that it's not about what you're eating, but more about how much you're eating.

Overeating has been a huge problem of mine growing up. When you join BB, they send you portioning containers, which have become my best friend. It also comes with a guide for how many containers of each food group you should be eating. It differs for every person!

Taking the time to research and plan is super important if you want to make better choices. I recommend eating about 3 meals per day, and filling in the gaps between them with nutrient-dense snacks. One of my favorite things when I'm hungry or craving something sweet is Mint Chocolate Shakeology! It's packed with protein to fill you up, "green super foods" to fight off diseases and boost immunity, and digestive enzymes to break down foods and increase your absorption of nutrients. Snacks are also a great time to get that serving of fruits of veggies that you're missing!

Balancing your meals, fueling your body with nutrient-dense foods, and prepping for the week are super important for starting your body off with a clean slate for 2017. You only get one body, it's important to treat it the best you can, and a clean plate is a great way to start.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
