The 80s are often recognized as having the best classic movies to watch. However, people often forget that the 70s are also home of some blockbuster classics just as worthy of attention. So here’s to all the overlooked best movies of the 70s:
1. "Jaws" (1975)
The summer blockbuster that made people afraid to swim in the ocean -- "Jaws." Directed by Steven Spielberg at only 27 years old, "Jaws" was one of his first big hits. Spielberg teamed up with composer John Williams for one of the first times of many to create an outstanding theme song which can be credited for a portion of the success of "Jaws." The terrifying motion picture features a series of shark attacks on the island of Amity, believed to be caused by a great white shark. The new mayor of Amity sets out to put an end to the attacks and hopes to restore safety to the island to draw back tourists for the Fourth of July weekend.
2. "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" (1977)
In this science fiction film starring Richard Dreyfuss, the lives of many change when an unidentified flying object is spotted. After many strange occurrences, the world will discover the results of the encounters of aliens.
3. "Saturday Night Fever" (1977)
Starring the dreamy John Travolta, "Saturday Night Fever" will have you grooving to the beat. While training for a big dance competition, Travolta's character finds himself in many sticky situations -- and of course, the film features many classic tunes from the Bee Gees.
4. "Alien" (1979)
A crew encounters a nest of eggs inside an alien ship while on their journey home -- terror begins when one of the eggs attaches itself onto a crew member, leading to a disaster of events from there.
5. "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971)
Five golden tickets are hidden in Wonka bars dispersed around the world -- those lucky enough to find a golden ticket are granted a day tour of Willy Wonka's mysterious, yet fascinating chocolate factory. The movie revolves around a poor boy named Charlie, who was the last lucky winner of a golden ticket, and encounters all kinds of strange adventures inside the chocolate factory.
6. "American Graffiti" (1973)
On the last night of summer vacation, a group of friends try to make the most out of their time. Between peer pressure, girls and the pressure of college, "American Graffiti" will take you on a wild ride.
7. "The Sting" (1973)
In "The Sting," two con men team up in order to get revenge on the man responsible for a crime. However, when their scheme doesn't play out as planned, they'll have to improvise to make it work.
8. "Grease" (1978)
In this movie musical, we adventure with Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) as she transfers to Rydell High School and makes her group of friends in the "Pink Ladies." She soon realizes that her summer romance, Danny (John Travolta), also attends her new school and faces all kinds of complications when he tries to act too cool for her to impress his friends in the "T-Birds."
9. "Superman" (1978)
As a young boy, the son of a scientist, Kal-El realizes his superhuman powers after being sent to Earth when his home planet was destroyed. He claims himself "Superman," and uses his powers to fight evil. However, plans go corrupt when he battles his biggest enemy, Lex Luther.
10. "Star Wars" (1977)
Under the direction of Darth Vader, the Imperial Forces hold hostage Princess Leia to win the rebellion against the Galactic Empire. However, Luke Skywalker teams up with Han Solo on a rescue mission, as well as to provide justice to the Galaxy.
