As we were sitting at the dinner table, my parents started quoting lines from the movie Stripes (1981). Of course, having no education on movies past 1995, I had no idea what they were talking about. Then my dad turns to me and says, "Do you know what movie that quote is from?" Blankly I stare at him. My mom then grabs a piece of paper and begins to write down a list of movies from the late '70s to the '80s that I have to watch.
Here was her reasoning why:
1. They're classics.
2. Each one teaches a life lesson.
3. They have the all time best quotes.
4. Because some are cheesy, but awesome.
5. They don't like movies like they used to.
6. It will make me better at trivia. Oh good, my one goal in life is to be amazing at trivia night.
Regardless of the reasoning, my parents gave me a list of 14 movies that I need to watch:
Smokey and The Bandit (1977)
Staring Burt Rynolds, Sally Field, and Jerry Reed. This movie is about a journey across state lines with a sherif in hot pursuit. The Bandit is hired to pick up a trailer full of beer from Texas and return it in one piece. Who cares that it's technically not an '80s flick?
Caddyshack (1980)
Staring Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, and Chevy Chase. Another iconic '80s Bill Murray film. This light-hearted, funny film is about an executive golf course dealing with a new member and a dancing gopher.
Stripes (1981)
Starring Bill Murray, John Candy, and Harold Ramis. The reasoning behind having to see this one was all behind Bill Murray's character, John. Two guys run out of luck in their jobs and decide to enlist in the Army to get in shape. John unexpectidly become the leader of his platoon filled with assorted misfits.
Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)
Staring Sean Penn, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Judge Reinhold. This movie is another amazing '80s portrayal of high school. My mother thinks high school still hasn't changed much from how they show it in the movie. I mean, the style and technology are exactly the same.
The Outsiders (1983)
Staring C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, and Emilio Estevez. My mom claims this is the best-looking male cast that has ever happened. The movie is just as great as the book is. I'll watch it just for the sexy men.
Terms of Endearment (1983)
Staring Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, Jack Nicholson, and Danny DeVito. This movie is about a mother-daughter relationship, finding love, and dealing with harsh family problems. My mom says it is a "serious tear jerker," but she cries at everything though.
Footloose (1984)
Staring Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, and John Lithgow. Of course I have seen Footloose. My parents just thought it should be on the list anyway. Footloose is a classic movie with one of the general public's all-time favorite actors Kevin Bacon.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)
Staring Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Jeffery Jones, and Jennifer Grey. Yes, obviously I have seen this movie as well. I will also agree that this is a very funny movie. The '80s portrayed high school hilariously. The outfits are amazing too; Sloane's white leather fringe jacket was a winner!
Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987)
Staring John Candy, Steve Martin and Laila Robins. This movie is about Neal and Del's travels while trying to return home for Thanksgiving. Steve Martin is a great actor, so I will give it a watch.
Fatal Attraction (1987)
Staring Michael Douglas, Glenn Close, Anne Archer, and Ellen Hamilton Latzen. A classic movie about a married man's one night stand coming back to stalk him and his family. Good ole stalker movies, aren't they always great?
Beaches (1988)
Staring Bette Milder, Barbara Hershey, and John Heard. This is also a classic '80s girlfriend movie. About the bonds of friendship from childhood to adulthood although they have two different lifestyles. Also, "The Wind Beneath My Wings" by Bette Milder makes everyone cry.
The Great Outdoors (1988)
Staring John Candy, Don Aykroyd, and Stephanie Faracy. This is yet again another iconic John Candy movie. Family camping movies are usually pretty funny ones.
Uncle Buck (1989)
Staring John Candy, Macaulay Culkin, and Jean Louisa Kelly. This is also an iconic John Candy movie. His character as Buck Russle (or "Uncle Buck") is hilarious.
Steel Magnolias (1989)
Starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts. This is a classic girlfriends movie. The movie is about a group of girlfriends who come together in Truvy's Beauty Parlor. The hair in this movie is awesome.
I don't know if I am into '80s films, but it looks like my summer will be full of them.
