It was a Thursday evening on the E train when I came across an article that states in bold letters, "City program makes it easier to give, find second-hand items." What intrigued me (and it should do the same for you, too) is that I have tons of clothes I want to donate. When I came back from college, I seemed to have bought more clothes than I thought, and there was no room for it all. So if you have any high school clothes that are no longer "you," there is an app to donate and get back.
On June 27, 2016, the city's Department of Sanitation announced the program Donate NYC where New York residents can help find what they are looking for in a click of a button. From location to the nearest donation store, to what the stores have in case you wanted to go shopping. There is a website and a mobile app named DonateNYC for all New Yorkers to access. The app is easy to navigate by just pressing "donate" and selecting three items that you want to find in the store. After that, you decide how far you are willing to go by picking the radius and simply putting in your zip code. The nearest locations will show up and you can decide from there.
According to Department of Sanitation, DonateNYC says the city that never sleeps will reach its goal of "sending zero waste to landfills in 2030." The website's easy access will give residents detailed information so there is no excuse for lending out a hand for the environment. The program also helps local nonprofit organizations that are invisible.
If you are looking for a time or a place to help out the Earth you call home, this is one of those moments. Help decrease New York waste and stop sending reusable electronics, clothing attire, office furniture, office supplies, etc. All the items you owe could be reused, reduced and recycled if you just take time out of your life. We only have Earth to call home, do not waste it. Help by donating and reusing goods. Help reduce waste and conserve resources.
For all those app users, there is an app! For tablets or laptops, there is a website! Do you part, get your family and friends involved and go green! Let's be environmentally friendly, New Yorkers. You would be surprised how one person's actions can impact another. Be an example; be a leader.
