It is not often that I get to show people around. Having come to Boston from Connecticut, I find myself following the lead of others who are more familiar with the area. Sometimes it seems as though everyone in this city already knows everyone else, while I am still trying to figure out what part of Boston I am in.
This past weekend, my two roommates and I went on a school sponsored trip to Six Flags and The Big E. The price for the whole day was only $15, which included tickets into both parks and transportation. The three of us spent the morning running around Six Flags tackling the biggest rides we could. The scarier the better! At around 4 o’clock we loaded back into the buses and drove to West Springfield, Massachusetts to spend the rest of the day at The Big E.
This fair has been one of my all time favorite things to do in the fall for years. I go out of my way every season to make sure that I can make my way up to this event. When we got off of the bus I was thrilled to learn that neither of my roommates had ever been to this fair. Laura was especially excited to see it since she was from San Diego, California. I was so excited to be able to show the two of them around one of my favorite fairs. We immediately went to the state buildings. This is by far my favorite part of the Big E. Each state has its own building in which everything inside it features different things that the state is proud of or is well known for. We enjoyed tasting New Hampshire’s famous kettle corn, Vermont’s maple sugar cotton candy and Maine's blueberry ice-cream. I loved showing them the Connecticut building which showcased Mystic Aquarium, Legos, and UCONN.
After exploring the different cultures within each state building, the three of us made our way towards the animal exhibits. We pet rabbits, goats, sheep, chickens, and even a baby donkey. Our favorite animals were the baby chicks and the baby pigs, and we seriously contemplated taking one of them back to our dorm to keep as a pet.
After falling in love with all of the little farm animals, we decided it was time for food. First off, who doesn’t love fair food? There’s pretty much a deep fried version of all of your favorite foods; fried dough, fried oreos, even fried pickles! I devoured a bread bowl full of Massachusetts clam chowder, while Val inhaled a corn dog. Laura was the most daring out of all of us and decided on a giant turkey leg for dinner. The three of us split a funnel cake for dessert that was covered in powdered sugar. After we finished that, I was convinced that we were going to need to be rolled back onto the bus.
Exploring all of the different goods that the Big E had to offer was incredibly fun. The food was amazing (although extremely unhealthy I’m sure). By 9 o'clock the three of us were absolutely exhausted. Within ten minutes of being back on the bus, we were all fast asleep. It was so much fun to be able to show Val and Laura around while enjoying one of my all time favorite fall events!
