When I first saw a cinemagraph, I immediately thought of the magical moving pictures in the Harry Potter universe. Cinemagraphs, according to Wikipedia , are "... still photographs in which a minor and repeated movement occurs, forming a video clip. They are published as an animated GIF or in other video formats, and can give the illusion that the viewer is watching an animation." They are created by looping frames of the same photograph and editing video into the photograph.
They are fascinating and magical, and while they aren't as useful as GIFs are when expressing emotions or reactions, they are beautiful pieces of artwork that are, from my perspective, underrated. Here are some of my favorite cinemagraphs from popular movies for your viewing pleasure.
"Harry Potter (2004, 2001, 2011)"
“But you know, happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
"Fight Club (1999)"
"Listen up, maggots. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else."
"The Matrix (1999)"
"Neo, sooner or later you're going to realize just as I did that there's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path."
"The Shining (1980)"
“Some places are like people: some shine, and some don’t."
"Forrest Gump (1984)"
"Mama always said, dying was a part of life. I sure wish it wasn't."
"Skyfall (2012)"
"Hire me or fire me. It's entirely up to you."
"Deadpool (2016)"
"Here's the thing. Life is an endless series of trainwrecks with only brief commerical-like breaks of happiness. This had been the ultimate commerical break... Which meant it was time to return to our regularly scheduled programming."
If you enjoyed these cinemagraphs, there are resources where you can find much more, like on Reddit's r/Cinemagraphs. Enjoy!
