Cinco De Mayo: Not yours to Appropriate

It's Feliz Cinco De Mayo,

Not Cinco De Drinko' gringo!

You can't go around chanting

"Build that Wall" while in Cancun, Mexico

During Spring Break, yet come back

To the U.S. and "celebrate" the Mexican culture.

My culture, my heritage is not a joke,

You can't hate me and at the same time "love"

My culture, it doesn't work that way.

If you want to celebrate it,

Then at least know why the date is important.

It's not Mexico's Independence Day,

It's not a day that gives you an excuse to

Eat tacos and drink Tequila.

The reality is that the day is important

Because it signifies how Mexicans overcame

Their WHITE oppressors, the French in the

Battle of Puebla.

This means that what you are actually celebrating

Is how Mexicans killed White people in a battle,

Meant to overthrow White Imperialists.

So go ahead and celebrate,

But at least do it the right way.

DON'T APROPRIATE MY CULTURE!

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…
