News, What's News?

I get my tiny (very tiny) updates from 140 character tweets, or the little Snapchat news stories. Thank god for those, otherwise I wouldn’t know when Diwali is in India, or when Miami, Florida is having some rager on the beach.

News, What's News?

When I sat down to write this article, I had all my focus on writing a news story. I was going to pick a news story or topic that I was familiar with, and then research it a little to get more facts. However, the more I thought about it the more I realized I don’t know much about the news or current events. I haven’t watched a news channel in months, I haven’t read a newspaper in forever, when I want to get details on the presidential candidates I send my dad a quick text saying, “Who’s winning?” or “Is Donald Trump winning? If so, I have my passport ready and Canada is right there.”

I realized I am very behind on my current events and news outside of Cincinnati. I get my tiny (very tiny) updates from 140 character tweets, or the little Snapchat news stories. Thank god for those, otherwise I wouldn’t know when Diwali is in India, or when Miami, Florida is having some rager on the beach.

Initially I did not see my lack of news knowledge as a problem, but the more I think about it the more I realize I should know what’s going on around the world. Hurricane Patricia is going to be one of the most disastrous events in the Western Hemisphere, and all I’ve learned about it has been through a 30-second Twitter video. Now don’t get me wrong, those little Twitter and Snapchat updates are convenient. I get a minimal understanding of an event or story very quickly, however I don’t fully know what’s going on, whom it’s affecting and what the repercussions are.

I do not necessarily avoid the news, but I definitely do not go out of my way to keep up or stay informed. Partially I don’t want to keep up because the news stresses me out, makes me upset, or is too negative for me to deal with. Not very often do we hear good things coming out of the nicely dressed news anchor’s mouth, nor do we see happy headlines in our papers.

However, I’ve decided to give a few news updates that I have been informed about and are near and dear to my heart (kind of).

Halloween is coming up. It is October 31, which is my mother’s birthday. Happy Birthday, Momma. Yours truly is planning on dressing up as Willy Wonka (the Johnny Depp version, not the Gene Wilder one. Sorry Gene fans) one night, and then Captain Hook another night.

Adele released a new song. I guess it’s good, I haven’t heard it yet – HOLD ON, I’ll listen to it right now and give you LIVE feedback...

OK, I’m back and I have some things to say about this song and music video. First off, that woman can sing! Second, if (when) you watch the video, please notice the cell phones they are using. Like, Adele is about to make $47 billion off of this song and she’s using a flip phone in the video. Whatever, I don’t judge. Third, her intense eye contact throughout the song gave me chills. Sorry, all of those comments were basically about the video, so now you have to watch it.

Also, while on the topic of Adele, I read a tweet today and I want to share it…

Justin Bieber came out with a new song. That’s all I have to say.

I have 1,544 followers on Instagram.

Ristretto coffee shots are 410 percent better than regular espresso shots.

The Bearcat’s played Connecticut this past weekend in our Homecoming game.

I had to look up how to spell Connecticut.

Texas is going to get a lot of rain because Patricia the hurricane is being so rude to everyone.

If Donald Trump becomes president of the United States, I’m flying myself to Canada or Sweden.

I had Chick-fil-A for lunch. I love waffle fries.

That’s all the news I got for you all. Thanks for tuning in.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
