There's an invasion coming...
An invasion of Cicada's that is. The cicadas are going to be emerging in Georgia in 2017 after laying underground for more than 13 years. So what's there to know?
Cicadas are insects that begin their lives by feeding off of fluids that are given off trees found in deciduous forests, typically found in the eastern United States.
After they reach the 13 or 17 year mark mature and remove themselves from the ground in staggering numbers. They are most notable for also producing dealing noise all the time. Most everybody reading this article has experienced a cicada emergence at one time or another.
So what is their impact on the environment?
Nothing you would be able to honestly notice. Cicadas do not sting or bite, but feast on the sap that comes off of trees for about five or six weeks and then lay eggs and are gone until the next cycle.
So why do they emerge in such numbers?
Cicadas somewhere along the way decided that in order to survive, they will overwhelm their predators such as rabbits, dogs birds and squirrels, by being so numerous that not all of them would die. This is why it feels like when cicadas come they are everywhere, it is because they are!
So be careful where you step in the near future, and be on your toes, the cicadas are heading our way.
