With the ending of the NBA season and the Cleveland Cavaliers earning their first NBA Championship it is only right to talk about the drought that Buffalo has been in. We all know the historic fail that the Buffalo Bills have suffered in the early nineties. The four consecutive losses in the Super Bowl, the only team to do so. The Sabres latest years being not how the fans have expected or wanted. So, let's start.
There has never been a major championship brought home to Buffalo. The Buffalo Bandits made it to the final round of the playoffs this year but failed to bring home the gold and the last time they did so was in 2008 but, they will not be included in this article. The last time the Sabres made the playoffs was in 2010. Following the year, was the downfall of the franchise. Losing many key players played crucial to the failure of the team. This last year they had 35 wins, the most since 2012. Being a Buffalo fan, I will say like the last few years, there is a lot to look forward to. They have been rebuilding ever since they dealt Ryan Miller. With many talented prospects in the organization, the potential for this club is through the roof. However, there is still work to be done. I believe the coaching is where it needs to be along with the young talent. With Steven Stamkos being a free agent even though it is extremely unlikely, Stamkos would fit in perfectly with the team. Still young and being a goal scoring threat in any game, the Sabres should still make a strong effort to bring him to the Queen City.
Now where do we start with the Buffalo Bills? Oh the Bills, still cannot even buy their way to the playoffs. While I cry over the fact that they lost to the Jags in London this past year and had good chances to turn other "L's" into "W's" they ended up missing the playoffs for the sixteenth straight year. Again, as a biased writer, we still have a lot to look forward to. As I'm writing this I am screaming, "In Tyrod we trust!" I am a firm believer that Tyrod Taylor is the quarterback that the Bills need to be successful, unlike the past. For Pete sake, we almost made the playoffs with Kyle Orton under center. Tyrod can do it all and is an explosive player that can shift momentum to Buffalo with just one play. There are a lot of guys on this team that are hungry for success and that is what I love the most. Bringing in a well-known coach such as Rex Ryan was also a huge move. The publicity that Buffalo received was incredible and almost made them relevant in the NFL again. The Bills are due for a playoff appearance whether it's this year or next year mark my words it will happen. Even with the tough schedule the Bills face in 2016, they have a very good shot of squeaking into the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
Now, the fans of Buffalo. The Bills and Sabres have been below average and even terribly bad the last decade yet, they are still one of the best fan bases in the states. If there was ever a championship brought to Buffalo the celebration would go on for weeks. If people are being thrown through tables and set on fire while tailgating for one regular season Bills game, imagine what would happen during a home playoff game. Imagine the energy inside the Ralph. The city would riot just for a playoff game whether home or away. Imagine Rick Jeanneret calling a playoff game at the end of his career. Imagine a banner being raised for the winning of the cup and honoring the historic career of RJ. It would bring tears to fans and it would be an unbelievable moment.
The city of Buffalo has so much history, not only just the sports teams here but the city itself. A championship being raised here gives me chills just thinking about it and I hope that it happens soon. The city of Buffalo and its dedicated fans deserve it.
