Christmastime As Told By "Die Hard"
Flickering Myth

It's Christmastime, the most wonderful time of the year. The spirit in the air is joyous & electric, and all sorts of holiday festivities have already commenced, with Christmas itself coming up soon. Such festivities and celebrations have been immortalized in numerous Christmas movies. There's a ton of them; older classics like "It's a Wonderful Life," "Miracle on 34th Street," "A Christmas Carol," and newer classics like "Elf," "Home Alone," and "A Christmas Story." However, one of the greatest Christmas movies of all time, undoubtedly, is 1988's "Die Hard." It's a thrilling movie to watch this time of year, and an action masterpiece with a perfect script, fantastic performances, memorable quotes, heart-pounding fights & action set pieces, & an all-around fun Christmas vibe. So, in honor of Christmas being right around the corner, here is Christmastime, as told by John McClane, Hans Grueber, and the rest of the "Die Hard" ensemble:

When your family questions why they brought you to a fancy Christmas party.

When you're at Christmas dinner and someone brings up politics.

When you try to sneak a look at a present but get caught.

When you're in public and hear "Last Christmas" start playing, so you look at your friend...

...And you both know you're about to belt the lyrics out.

When you tell your parents about the expensive things you want for Christmas.

When you wait for your favorite cousins to roll up and celebrate Christmas with you.

When you wake up to find everything covered in a thick layer of snow.

When you're called to start helping pull out Christmas decorations from the attic.

When everyone is wearing cool Christmas socks except you.

When someone notices there's no more egg-nog in the house & rightly freaks out.

When you're asked to go get more egg-nog.

When that one family member shows up to the already-crazy Christmas party late.

When you turn the house into an absolute mess after opening presents.

When someone refuses to sing-along to "Last Christmas" or "All I Want For Christmas Is You."

When you and a family member you haven't seen in forever begin roasting each other.

When the family members you're visiting for Christmas have you feeling sassy.

When you unexpectedly get an automatic Nerf gun for Christmas.

When you're asked if you want to proceed with online Christmas shopping.

When your parents get you the present that they said they weren't going to buy.

When a family member says you should be spoiling someone this Christmas.

When it's Christmas morning & your mom says she's making cinnamon buns.

When someone tells you that they're sick of watching "A Christmas Story."

When it's time to watch "Die Hard" on Christmas Eve.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
