Tradition is defined as a long-established or inherited way of thinking or acting. To some, tradition is something that may or may not be established without care. To me however, tradition is something I strongly adhere to. Around the holidays I find tradition particularly important. Tradition helps us to keep memories alive, helps us to remember those we have lost, and assists us in passing on stories for years to come.
One of my fondest memories from Christmases past is preparing for Santa's arrival on Christmas Eve. My mom and dad would help me of course, and we'd put a candy cane on the tree, milk and Christmas cookies on the tray by the fireplace, and a note to the big man himself taped to the mantle. We even left out carrots for the reindeer! This tradition has gone back as far as I can remember. I recall how excited I would get thinking about Santa coming down the chimney, and I had even tried to stay up and catch him a few times! Now that I'm twenty, and reality has unfortunately caught up with my Christmas Eve beliefs (many years ago don't worry), some would say that these memories are just that...memories. So though my note to Santa that still hangs above the mantle has changed from one of asking to one of thanking, tradition still has me leaving cookies and milk out for the big jolly elf every Christmas Eve.
Tradition is so important. It helps to make the holidays what they are. Even though some may say it is silly, I find tradition to be an integral part of the holidays that helps us remember what we really love about Christmas.
