In the beginning of Matthew 1:19-25, we see Joseph contemplating divorcing Mary. He thought about divorcing her because she was pregnant through the Holy Spirit. If he were to follow through with his plan, he would have preserved his honor in the eyes of the law. Instead, by the command of an angel, he stayed with her and named their son Jesus. After reviewing this passage, this consideration came to mind:
Joseph had a lot to lose here. He was a man that was pledged to be wed to a woman he could have sworn was a virgin. Imagine the shame that would have been brought to his name if this were made public, or the threats that would have been made against Mary for her ‘supposed’ adultery. Much was at stake, and yet, he did not leave her. He sacrificed his desire to preserve his dignity, and listened to the angel. Sacrifice is what took place here.
Although it has been a few days since Christmas, the thought of what was sacrificed is still fresh in our minds. The gifts, the many travels, the many hours of house preparation for family and friends. A sacrifice was made for all of these things.
In all of the madness, I must ask:
What have we learned about sacrifice during this Christmas season?
It is stated in Proverbs 14:1 (NIV) that “The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down”. Consider the impact, or “house” you have established by your sacrifice. How many smiles have you put on the faces of those who have little to nothing? How many households have you filled with your talents of singing Christmas tunes, or filled with smells of various meals? How many hearts have been uplifted because of the love you gave?
Whatever you have sacrificed this Christmas season, keep in mind what you have built. You have done a wise thing this season, now carry this into the New Year.
