My dad is a preacher and has been for over thirty years. The reason I tell you this is because we get pretty pumped about Christmas at my house. December is by far the busiest month of the year for my family. We are consumed with things to do for the church and our family. One thing our church does is hold three Christmas Eve services at 4 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 11 p.m. It is a candlelight service. Songs are sung, and my dad gets up to give a message. Every year he talks about the birth of Jesus and how it brought light to our dark world. He goes on to explain that God brought light to us and if we stand together, our light can make a difference. He then lights a few candles which pass on the flame, and quickly the church is lit with the flames burning.
This year was different. We still had all these things, but he took it further. He spoke of our #CommitToChristmas campaign, I guess you can call it. He explained, "Christmas isn't just a day, its a lifestyle." Then he challenged the church to commit to Christmas.
I may have lost some of you here, but just stick with me. Some of you may be wondering "How do I commit to a day?" Well, read the quote again – Christmas isn't just a day. You see, Christmas is why I believe what I believe. Christmas is the foundation of God's love for us. Christmas is who we are. Christmas isn't just a day, it is everything. Christmas is when God sent His son to be born to save the world. Christmas is a commitment from God to fulfill His promise to bare our sin so we could be made righteous. Christmas is God's love pouring down on us.
Christmas is more than just a day. It is a lifestyle because it is us believing that our sins are wiped clean. It is us surrendering to Him. Christmas is us receiving His light, and going into the world and shining the light. Christmas is about being His. Committing to Christmas is way more than just committing to December 25. Committing to Christmas doesn't end.
Go ahead and type the hashtag into the Facebook search bar. You'll see pictures of people who have committed to Christmas with all that they are and have. Maybe it's time we all committed to Christmas. Maybe it's time we let the world know that Christmas isn't just one day for us.
