Christmas Is So Much More

It is so much more than the decorations and presents.

Christmas is right around the corner, and if you love the holiday as much as I do, you probably already have decorations hung and are constantly listening to Christmas music. Of course, Christmas is a season to be jolly and joyful, but we often get caught up in the materialistic meaning of Christmas. Christmas is so much more than what we believe it to be.

Christmas is…

More than the decorations

One of my favorite things to do around the holiday is drive around the neighborhood to see the Christmas decorations. I love how bright the lights twinkle and how big the blow-up Santas are. The perfectly decorated Christmas tree and the full stockings that hang on the fireplace have become our top priorities. And although the decorations are pretty, we have become so infatuated with the materialistic items that we tend to forget that this is not what the holiday is all about.

More than the presents

After Thanksgiving dinner, everyone turns into Christmas mode. We are willing to go out and stand in a line for hours upon hours waiting for a store to open just to get deals on presents. The norm is now to cut a holiday of thankfulness in half because we are too eager and impatient to wait to buy presents. Of course, when we were little kids the best part of Christmas was waking up Christmas morning to find presents underneath the tree. But here is the thing, Christmas is not just about the presents.

Christmas is about…

Family and friends

Holidays are meant to be shared with your family and friends. It is about spending time with the people that mean the most to you. It is not necessarily a time to give each other presents, but a time to play games, to talk and to enjoy each other’s company.

Giving back

Although many of us are able to spend the holiday with a family dinner, there are many other people who are unable to do so. The Christmas season is meant for paying it forward. We are supposed to go out into our communities and help those who are less fortunate.

Love

The Christmas season is about sharing our love with others. God showed us his love by giving us his son Jesus. We need to pass on the love that has been given to us to other people in our lives. Spreading the love and joy of the holiday is what we should be doing, rather than fighting through a door to get the best deal on presents.

The birth of Jesus Christ

Lastly, the most important meaning of Christmas: The birth of our Christ and Savior. Christmas would not be Christmas without the birth of Jesus. Rather than the lights and the big blow up characters, we need more nativity sets. We need to bring the celebration of Jesus back into the day that is supposed to be about him.

Christmas is not about the decorations and the presents, it is so much more than that. This Christmas season, let us all try to turn our attention back to what the holiday is supposed to be about.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. - John 3:16

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
