Santa won't be delivering presents to all the good little boys and girls this year (or even coal to the naughty ones) and it's all our fault. The problem, you see, is that we have all been naughty this year, and last year, and the year before that. Humans have been constantly burning fossil fuels and releasing harmful toxins into the atmosphere that are rapidly increasing the greenhouse effect and causing our planet to heat up. How does global warming correlate with Christmas, you ask? Reindeer.
Sadly, the effects of global warming have been causing mass starvation among Siberian Reindeer. The fall temperatures are warmer than normal, so there has been quite a bit of rainfall when there would usually be below-freezing temperatures. The autumn rain causes thick layers of ice to form on the ground when winter comes along, which makes it impossible for the reindeer to find food. If the current trend of global warming continues the way it's going, the future for our reindeer does not look promising.
The reindeer is such a majestic creature. They gracefully soar across the entire planet in one night and look good doing it. Imagine a world without reindeer--childrens' books would have to be re-written, christmas songs would need to be re-worded and Santa would have to find a new way to deliver his presents. I know we live in a technologically savvy society, but do we really want Santa's sleigh to be machine-powered? Reindeer are a christmas icon and the holiday season just wouldn't be the same without them. So this is my urgent message to you: Unless you want to be the Grinch that stole Christmas, please take care of your planet.
