Red and green.

Green and red.

The colors that say “The end is ahead!”

Break is a-coming with jingles and tunes.

Just after these finals you’ll feel brand new.

A new winter sweater, a new winter love.

And with winter comes that joy from above.

The scarfs, and hot chocolate, the fire ablaze, each of these to warm your everyday.

Freedom from finals, conclusion with grades, the refreshing thought of a month of free days.

The elves wrap the presents, the grandmothers bake, the smell of waffles bring you awake.

It all seems a dream so strange and anew.

What happened to college? The dorm smell of mildew?

No time to dabble, no time to delay, with Christmas break comes a new bliss each day.

Coffee on Monday, lunch for today, tomorrow a date just to say “Hey!”

The outings with friends, the “innings” with family, winter break is sweeter than candy.

Yet some are alone, are shivering and cold.

No money for shelter, no parents at home,

Feeling so lonely feeling so low, this time of the year just yearning for love.

Take time from the hustle, from the bustle, and fun,

To give back to others to make them number one.

A toy for a child, a song for the old, a jacket for the homeless asleep in the cold.

Gather your friends for a new kind of fun,

For giving, and sharing,

For laughter for tears,

To make someone’s solitude a merry story for years.

It takes one single smile, a laughter, a joke, to remind each other of the season of old.

So think of Saint Nick go out and be bold!

Bake cookies for neighbors,

Make chocolates for friends,

Enjoy every minute up to the end.

The end of the season,

The end of the cold,

Don’t blink,

Don’t sneeze

Ready set go!

So here’s a list, check it twice, and find any way to do something nice. This season make it your choice to add a little Christmas spice.

  1. Christmas stocking drive for Soldiers
  2. Letter Drive for Veterans
  3. Stuffed Animal Drive for Underprivileged Children
  4. Carols at the Retirement Home
  5. Coat and Mitten Drive for the Homeless
  6. Book Drive for Impoverished Schools
  7. Secret Santa for Day Care Kids
  8. Story Reading at the Library
  9. Care Packages for the Homeless
  10. Volunteering at the Local Soup Kitchen
  11. Babysitting for family or neighbors while they shop for Christmas presents
  12. Hold a potluck for neighborhood families
  13. Bake cookies for children in foster care
  14. Wrap Christmas presents for older neighbors
  15. Shovel snow/ rake leaves for a neighbor
  16. Take hot chocolate and candy canes to the local bus stop or metro rail stop
  17. Set up Christmas decorations for a neighbor who doesn’t have time, or who is getting old
  18. Find a foster child or elderly to become your Christmas mission. Bake them cookies, spend time with them, and buy them small $5 presents.
  19. Create fleece-tie blankets for the homeless.
  20. Do something for your family! Wash the dishes, or do the laundry. Make breakfast, or walk the dog.

So this Christmas skip the Starbucks, skip the mall

Save a few dollars, save on some time.

This is the season to change it all.

Change the cold that they battle

The loneliness inside

Warm them with love,

With Christmas pride!

Now grab some friends,

Throw a party

Because with giving to be done no one will be tardy!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
